Lyle Hilton Shattuck6/4/1915 - 7/13/2005 Lyle Hilton Shattuck, born June 4, 1915 in Oakland, CA, died peacefully in his sleep, Wednesday, July 13, 2005, from natural causes in Roseville, CA, at the age of ninety. The son of John Webster Shattuck and Meta Hovey Shattuck, Lyle grew up in Lodi, CA. As a youth, Lyle proved to be a gifted student and enjoyed participating in sports; swimming, wrestling, boxing, and basketball, in particular. Lyle could still sink a free throw while in his eighties in the family hoop. He was a 1932 graduate of Lodi High School. Upon graduation from high school, Lyle moved to Sacramento to attend Sacramento City College, and in 1934, he married Catherine Jane Gardner of San Jose, CA. In 1935, Lyle transferred to the University of California at Berkeley, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology with a minor in Physics in 1937. The following year, Lyle's first child, Barbara Jane Shattuck was born. Lyle's natural curiosity and love of learning set an example that continues to be followed in the family. Lyle sought opportunities for learning in a diverse range of subjects from auto mechanics and welding to physics, astronomy, computer science, art and psychology, through classes, reading and conversation, which he exercised until the day of his death. After graduating from Cal, Lyle worked as an investigator for the California Welfare Relief Administration. This was followed by seven years as an Adult Probation Officer with the Alameda County Probation Department. During this time, Lyle worked the docks at the Port of Oakland, as well; loading munitions and supplies on ships bound for the Pacific Theater of the war. He also entered Bolt Hall School of Law at U.C. Berkeley, graduating with a Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1947. He practiced Law in Oakland until 1951. During this time he was divorced from Catherine. In 1950, Lyle married Charlyne Norman, of Wasco, CA. Lyle and Charlyne moved to Roseville, CA in 1951, where their two sons, Charles and John were born and raised. Lyle practiced law for the next fifty years, mostly in Placer County with offices in Roseville and for a time in Auburn. During those years, Lyle forged a reputation among his peers as a skilled legal scholar and a fearless litigator, a reputation well deserved and one of which he was proud. Lyle's legal practice encompassed everything from contracts and corporations, family law, divorce, and adoptions to criminal defense, including capital cases. Lyle's motivation in the pursuit of his legal practice stemmed from a profound respect for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as the bedrock of individual freedom and liberty, and the rule of law. This respect for the Constitution and Bill of Rights continues to be shared among his family as a core value. Lyle was an avid outdoorsman his entire life. He particularly enjoyed hunting and fishing. Lyle introduced his children, Barbara, Charles and John to the outdoors early in life, an act which created a family legacy of backpacking and other outdoor activities, and a deep appreciation and connection to wilderness. This connection is likewise evidenced in the lifestyles of Lyle's grandchildren, Brian and Kevin Hager, and Annie, Joe, and Tom Shattuck, and Pete Carpenter and Mandy Porter. Lyle was a devoted, loving and supportive father and grandfather. He was often found cheering his children and grandchildren at sporting events and teaching them the "secrets of the outdoors," like how to present a dry fly to a wary trout and the movement and habits of animals in the wild. The most important gift Lyle gave his children and grandchildren is in how he cherished them and in his steadfast belief in them and their abilities. We, his children and grandchildren are forever grateful for that gift and we are proud to be his family, Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, John Webster and Meta Hovey Shattuck, and his son-in-law, Carlton Hager. He is survived by Charlyne Shattuck; his children, Barbara Hager, Charles and John Shattuck; daughters-in-law, Dee Shattuck, Debra Delzell, and former daughter-in-law and dear friend, Ricki Heck; his grandchildren, Brian and Rhonda Hager, Kevin and Nicole Hager, Annie, Joe and Tom Shattuck, Pete Carpenter, Mandy and Lyle Porter, Neal Delzell Buzzo and Lindsay Delzell Buzzo; great grandchildren Brenden, Tayor and Tierney Hager and Jake, Lucas and Benjamin Porter. Lyle is also survived by his close friend, Charles Gieseler, who was a great help to Lyle in his later years and whom he looked upon as another son. There will be no public memorial service as requested by Lyle. A private ceremony of family and friends is planned to celebrate Lyle's life and love of the outdoors. David was born July 30, 1937 in Peoria, IL, to William and Helena Sunborg Davidson. In 1955 David joined the United States Air Force in keeping with his rich military family history. He was a proud descendent of General Davidson who served under General George Washington, and for whom Davidson University and the town of Davidson, NC were named. Chief Davidson's Great Grandfather was Brigadier General Samuel Davidson and his Grand Father was Jessie Davidson, a veteran of the Spanish American War. David had a distinguished career as a flight engineer and a variety of assignments in the US and around the world including the Azores Islands, Casablanca, Morocco, Ankara, Turkey, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Kaiserslautern, Germany, Pleiku and Saigon, Vietnam. He had significant achievements and was a recipient of many U.S.A.F. awards and medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross. After 27 years, he retired from the U.S.A.F. and the Strategic Air Command (SAC) at Beale AFB and started a new successful career as a Quality Assurance Specialist in aircraft hydraulics at McClellan AFB. Again, countless people benefited from his devotion to duty and a job well done. David retired in 1999 when McClellan AFB closed. He is immensely missed by his wife of 44 years, Claudine de Lara Davidson; daughter Diana-Lyn (Robert) Rethford; Granddaughters Chrissie Curnutt and Senior Airman Kellie Curnutt, USAF Reserves and Alexandra Davidson; Grandson A.T. Herrick; and Great Granddaughter Dominique Duran. He also is survived by his Mother Helena; Sister Donna (Robert) Mikowski of Traverse City, MI; and Brother William (Patricia) Carpentier of IL. Friends and family are invited to attend a military graveside service at Roseville Public Cemetery, 421 Berry St., Roseville, CA 95678, on Thursday, August 4, 2005 at 10 a.m. Donations may be made in David's Memory to the Emergency and Trauma Center at Sutter-Roseville Medical Center 1 Medical Plaza, Roseville, CA 95661. Cannon, Jr. 11/27/1948 - 7/28/2005 Bob was born November 27, 1948 in Sacramento, CA and passed away July 28, 2005 in Roseville after a short illness. After attending Sierra College he moved to Sand Point, Alaska in the Aleutian Islands, where he worked as a commercial fisherman and also for the Aleut Indian Council School District. Bob loved music, cooking and friends. He had a talent for making mechanical repairs and construction work. His father preceded Bob in death in 1978. He is survived by his mother, Jean Cannon; aunt and uncle, Bob & Clo Thomas all of Roseville; aunt Virginia Crabtree; cousins Candy & Michael McAuliffe and family of Reno, NV; Kim & Allison Thomas and family of Granite Bay, CA; Keith and Allison Thomas of Windsor, CA; and Susan Laughlin and family of Clatskanie, OR. Friends are invited to a "Celebration of Life" to be held Friday, August 5, 2005 at 10 a.m. at Cochrane's Chapel of the Roses, 103 Lincoln Street, Roseville, CA.
