Train whistles are blown for safety of residents

I just read the story "Complaints aired over train whistles" by Richard Myers, and my question is simple: What will these new residents of Lincoln say the first time there is a child hit or a family in a car hit because they didn't hear the trains and thought it was safe because the crossing arms at Third Street are stuck in the down position again. What will they say to the families of those killed because they moved to an area too close to the tracks? This is like the man who built his house across the street from the airport runway and then sued the city to make them buy the house so he could move somewhere else! My family lived in Lincoln less than a block from the tracks for 11 years and I complained the first few months, too. We live in Oklahoma now, but after being there a while we got used to hearing the whistles and even got concerned when Amtrak went through a few times and never blew the whistle. I watched as the fire department and medics picked up the pieces of debris because someone thought it was safe to cross after the arms had been down for 15 minutes or more and didn't hear a whistle. Think about it, the whistles are being blown for your safety, not because the engineers want to wake you up at night. Grow up.Wayne Mikel
