Teen held after stabbing at Placer County Juvenile Hall

The Placer County Juvenile Detention Facility was on lockdown Monday morning after a 16-year-old ward stabbed a peace officer.The unidentified female suspect is currently housed in the maximum-security area of the facility, She reportedly used a pencil to stab a female staff member multiple times, officials said."One of our staff members was assaulted," said Fred Morawcznski, chief probation officer. "She's been treated and released from the hospital."He declined to provide the name of the victim, who suffered multiple puncture wounds to her face, lip and near her eye, officials said.The Placer County Juvenile Detention Facility on C Avenue at the DeWitt Center houses up to 50 underage offenders. All of the 47 young offenders currently in the facility attend school courses and have supervised "outdoor" recreation time and regularly attend school inside the walls of the facility.The suspect was working on schoolwork at the time of the altercation. All wards in the area were restrained as guards came to the aid of the injured peace officer, officials said."A report has been taken and will be filed with the District Attorney's Office," Morawcznski said. "Obviously, this is a severe assault on a peace officer."The suspect could be tried as an adult for the offense."If a juvenile commits what would be a strike offense and they are 16 years or older the DA has the power to direct file the case in adult court under the provision of Prop. 21," said Ted Peterson, supervising deputy district attorney for the juvenile division.Assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder are two crimes that fall into that category, however, officials have not yet determined with which crime the female offender will be charged.The Journal's Penne Usher can be reached at penneu@goldcountrymedia.com.
