Sister Elizabeth Marie Farrell, RSM (Sister Oliver)

Sister Elizabeth Marie Farrell died on January 21, 2006 at Our Lady of Mercy Convent, Auburn, CA. Daughter of the late Thomas and Bridgid Farrell, she is survived by her brother Patrick in Alberta, Canada and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brothers Laurence, Christopher, William, Thomas and her sisters Rose, Margaret, and Rose. Born on May 19, 1917 in Higginstown, Co. Meath, Ireland, Sr. Elizabeth Marie entered the Sisters of Mercy at St. Joseph Convent, Sacramento, on October 3, 1935 and made her profession of vows on May 14, 1938. She received her degree in history from the University of San Francisco. She taught for one year at the Sisters of Mercy Pre-Postulancy in Ardfert, Co. Kerry, Ireland.Most of her 68 years of service were devoted to education in Sacramento. She began her teaching at Sacred Heart and St. Joseph Elementary Schools. From 1940 to 1991 she taught various subjects in high school, including history, home economics and religion. She is fondly remembered as a dedicated teacher and mentor at St. Joseph Academy, Bishop Armstrong High School, Bishop Manogue High School and Christian Brothers High School. She held many administrative positions both for the Sisters of Mercy and the high schools.After retiring from teaching high school in 1991, Sr. Elizabeth Marie tutored at St. Robert Elementary School, Sacramento until she moved to the Motherhouse in Auburn in 1996, where she began her prayer ministry and service in the Motherhouse. Sister was well known for her hospitality to guests and the finesse of her wit.Friends are invited to attend a Vigil Service at our Lady of Mercy Convent Chapel, 535 Sacramento St., Auburn on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at 7 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 27, 2006 at 10 AM at our Lady of Mercy Convent Chapel. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Carmichael. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the newly founded Cristo Rey High School in care of the Sisters of Mercy, 535 Sacramento St., Auburn, CA 95603.
