Shih claims to be 'financially ruined' but still gets salary

The Journal's front page article about Ernest Shih, June 17, smacked of shoddy, sensationalist journalism. "Ruined my life and career" is indeed a dramatic story, but some important facts seemed to have been brushed aside in the interest of drama. Shih claims he has been "financially ruined" yet he has been paid full salary of $80,000 a year since he was arrested over a year ago. Journal writer Penne Usher tell us that Shih, his wife and two young children "had to leave his Auburn home and move into a rental in Sacramento following the media attention" with no explanation. Maybe his kids were traumatized by too many credit card fraud jokes on the school playground? Furthermore, Shih is not a free, wrongly-accused man. As the Journal previously reported, the criminal charges were dropped in part so the city can pursue a more expedient personnel charge against him. The original charges can be refiled at the conclusion of this case.Obviously, the guy did something very serious in the workplace for the city and the district attorney to proceed with such serious and lengthy proceedings. Let's save our headlines for real news and our sympathy for the wrongly accused who truly deserve it, including Shih should the resolution of his case warrant it. Daniel VonSpanielle Iowa Hill
