Local Roundup, by Andy Wilcox, Journal Sports EditorThe Placer girls basketball team had too many weapons for rival Del Oro Thursday night, wrapping up a share of its first Sierra Foothill League championship since 1990 with a 51-40 victory over the visiting Lady Eagles.?It?s a program championship,? Placer head coach Tony Camillucci said after his team (12-2, 23-6) sealed up a share of the title with Rocklin (12-2, 23-5), a 62-35 winner over Oakmont.?These girls have gone through every coach in the program and learned from all of them. (Assistant) Coach (Lisa) Menconi did a lot of team bonding with the kids. They?ve grown a lot, from when we hit our low point at the Oak Ridge Tournament then went down to the San Diego tournament and came together as a team.?Placer also certified that it will host its first two playoffs games next week. For Del Oro (6-8, 14-14), which started the week just 10th in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III power ratings out of 16 playoff teams, the loss will mean a much tougher playoff opener on Tuesday.Polly Dong had 15 of her game-high 21 points in the first half and the other six in the last quarter to keep Del Oro at bay. Stacy Gallagher-Bolton had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds as well as three assists. Jenny Pierce added six rebounds.Although the Lady Eagles contained several of Placer?s scoring threats, like Hanna Cross (zero points), Brenna Welch (two) and Brittany Yates (three), senior Sarah Graham picked up some slack with seven points, including a big 3-pointer in the final stanza. Graham did a good job on defense.?Cross will bounce back for the playoffs, Camillucci said. ?They were keying on her and making it difficult for her to get open shots.?The Lady Hillmen did the same themselves in holding Del Oro senior Courtney Schaefer to five points, probably her lowest output of the season. Yates and Dong did an incredible job guarding her, Camillucci said.Meghan Griffith led Del Oro with 16 points, while Andrea Brar added 10 and Sarah Stafford six.Placer?s JV completed a SFL sweep of Del Oro, 52-40, after needing overtime to win the first meeting. A 21-7 second quarter broke the game open for Placer (8-6, 15-10), which got a season-high 19 points and excellent defense from Kelly Hangaard. Christina Buck and Becca Reams each added eight points, and Kim Cassidy had six points and a solid defensive night.The freshman Lady Hillmen also prevailed, 35-34, avenging last month?s 12-point loss to the Lady Eagles. Elise Widin?s free throw was the winning point after Placer?s 22-16 halftime lead was trimmed to 30-24 after three quarters and gone near the end. Tara Miller led the Lady Hillmen with seven points, while Angela Linarez chipped in six and Melody Fields and Lucy Nemeth each added four points and great defense.
