Placer volleyball camp set for June

Sierra Scene, by Journal Sports StaffDirected by Placer girls varsity coach Kim Thueson, the Placer Girls Volleyball Camp will run June 11-15, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. daily, at Placer High. It is open to girls who will be entering grades 5-9 in the fall.Thueson, assistant coach Shelly Rabe, JV coach Pam McKenzie, freshman coach Jake Hardey and some of their players will be the camp counselors. The camp will emphasize individual skill development, game strategy, teamwork and practice organization.Cost is $65 for early registration, or $75 at the door, and includes a camp T-shirt. The annual Optimist All-Star volleyball matches will be played Thursday at El Camino High. The boys match is at 6 p.m. and the girls match is at 7:30 p.m. Playing for the boys will be Del Oro?s Levi Oates and Bear River?s Braidy Halverson, Nick Lubarsky, Sean Allstot and Drew Pascua.Youth Soccer Registration. Registration will be held in the Placer Hills School cafeteria from 9 to 11:30 a.m. May 19 and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 30.Cost is $37 per player. A $10 late fee will be charged after May 30. The Placer High girls basketball program has scheduled its second annual fund-raising golf tournament for May 17 at Auburn Valley Country Club.Check-in and the putting contest are set for noon, the shotgun start at 2 p.m., and awards dinner at 7 p.m. Entry fee is $95 and includes greens fees and cart. Auburn Ski Club has announced an expanded program of ski race training to help develop junior athletes from Reno, Sacramento and the Bay Area.Next season, the Auburn Ski Club-Alpine Meadows Ski Team will continue to offer night training three nights a week, in addition to daily and weekend training, for its ski and snowboard teams.Alpine program director Chuck Latimer, PhD, a former U.S. Ski Team coach, said the night training can add significantly to on-snow race training, allowing junior athletes to reach highly-competitive levels while living at home and continuing to attend their home schools.The Auburn Ski Club-Alpine Meadows Ski Team trains at Boreal Mountain Resort, Alpine Meadows Ski Resort and Northstar-at-Tahoe, and competes at events throughout Calfornia and around the West.Members of the team ? including junior racers Sealy Livermore, Jenn Avrin, Andrew Willoughby, Gabrielle Anthony and Eric Schlobohm ? last year achieved success ranging from Junior Olympic gold medals to membership on the Far West Development Team.Applications are now being accepted for next year?s racing programs.For more information, call Latimer at the ASC Training Center on Donner Summit at (530) 426-3313.
