Phillies seek players age 13

Sierra Scene, By Journal Sports StaffThe Foothill Phillies, a 13-year-old All-Star traveling baseball team, will play from Aug. 18 to Oct. 27, with doubleheaders Sundays.There will be one tryout, at 1 p.m. July 28 at Bear River High?s varsity field.Players must be no older than 13 before Aug. 1, 2003. Cost to play is $150, and includes a uniform, hat, jacket and equipment bag.Call 823-1919 or 269-0965 for more information.Bear River Baseball Camp setBear River High will host a summer baseball camp for ages 8 and older, including an advanced camp for ages 12 and up, July 15-18. Players will meet from 9 a.m. to noon daily.Basic fundamentals and skills will be taught, including both offensive and defensive aspects of baseball. Drills will be used to reinforce the proper mechanics of pitching, catching, infield play, outfield play, hitting, bunting and baserunning.Players will be taught in age groups and individually, using two full field and two batting cages, many hitting and field stations, games and fun competitions and chances to win prizes.Camp instructors are Bear River varsity coach Mike Viola and pitching coach Randy Wirick, who used to coach at Sacramento City College; fellow Bruin coaches John Beaston, Dave Kephart and Jim Amaral; and past and present Bear River players.Cost is $90 for all four days or $70 for each additional sibling, and includes camp T-shirt, refreshments and chances to win prizes.For more information, call 823-1919 or 269-0965.10K and 5K run/walk setEight women?s and eight men?s slow-pitch softball teams are invited to play in the Motherlode Softball Club-Players Pizza Tournament Aug. 3-4 at Grass Valley?s Condon Park.Team entry fee is $150.
