Chuck Wing (Charles Paddock Wing)5/17/1928-7/20/2004Chuck Wing (Charles Paddock Wing) of Lincoln, CA and a fifth-generation resident of Placer County, Calif. entered into rest July 20, 2004, at the age of 76, after a strong and courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. By his side were his wife and two children. Born in San Francisco on May 17, 1928, Chuck was the only child of W. P. ?Chet? and Gould Wing. Growing up, he would accompany his father, a sheep industry lobbyist, to agricultural events and as a teenager enjoyed working on a northern California ranch. During those younger days, he also loved spending many a summer with his mother at the Fallen Leaf Lake, Calif. From George Washington High School in San Francisco, he joined the U. S. Army. He spoke often about the highlights of his Army service, including being in the Military Police in Fairbanks, Ala. when that state was a U. S. Territory and like the Wild West. He also appreciated the opportunity to serve in a military escort for President Truman's inaugural parade. Chuck continued as an Army Reservist into the 1960?s, ending his Army career as a First Lieutenant. He graduated from San Jose State College in 1953 with a B. S. in Geography. While at college, Chuck truly honed his calling as a man of the committee, serving as officer or member of the Intrafraternity Council, the Social Affairs Committee, the Student Council, the Student Court, the Rally Committee, and others. He was active in two fraternities, Alpha Phi Omega and primarily Phi Sigma Kappa.After college, Chuck used his degree to work for Standard Oil for a short while. He then worked in Passenger Service and Sales at United Airlines, where he met his wife, Phyllis Boffo, a stewardess. Chuck and Phyllis were married Sept. 28, 1963. That same year, Chuck started work as a sales representative for Roehr Products Company, a medical products manufacturer. As a salesman, Chuck knew how to break the ice with a good joke, and so along the way he made many friends. During his career, he also served his community as officer or member of many organizations and committees, and for a time even worked as a reserve police officer.During a portion of his working years, Chuck and his family owned and operated a certified goat dairy, producing milk for products such as cheese while also raising and showing registered dairy goats as well as other livestock. He retired from medical products sales after thirty years, but in no way did he sit still. He simply joined his wife at their business, Lincoln Travel and Cruise, opened in 1990, and enjoyed with Phyllis many opportunities to travel to various parts of the world, particularly Central America and Europe. In addition, he continued even more actively the committee work he loved. Throughout his career and during his active retirement, Chuck always had a funny joke or good word for those around him. In his community work, he excelled at helping opposing groups find common ground, and, though having his own views, kept a non-partisan stance while working with others. He truly loved serving his community. During the last nearly thirty-five years, Chuck served as officer or member in such groups as the Loomis School Board, the Placer County Chamber of Commerce, the community and club levels of the Placer County 4H Program, the California State Fair Agricultural Advisory Committee, the Lincoln High School Farm Foundation, the Lincoln Rotary Club, the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce, the Placer County Visitor's Council, the Rural Lincoln Municipal Advisory Committee (as founding chairperson), the City of Lincoln Economic Development Committee, the Lincoln Arts and Culture Foundation, the Horizon Instructional Systems Governance Committee, the Sutter Hospital Advisory Council, the Native Sons of the Golden West, the American Legion, several agricultural groups, and many others. Due to his helpful activities, Chuck received several accolades over the years, including Lincoln?s 1995 Mr. Community Service Award. In 2004, his hometown of Lincoln honored him in many ways, including proclaiming a ?Chuck Wing Day?, making him the city?s July fourth Parade Grand Marshal, and giving him the ?Key to the City?. Chuck was humbly and deeply touched by these tributes.Surviving Chuck are his wife, Phyllis Wing of Lincoln; his son, Ben Wing with his wife, Kathy, of Foresthill; his daughter, Andrea Gladstone with her husband, Jeff, of Roseville; his two grandchildren, Ben and Caroline Gladstone of Roseville; his brothers and sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews, and many cousins. A Celebration of Life followed by a reception will be held Friday, July 30, 2004, at 1:00 p.m., at McBean Park Pavilion, McBean Park, 65 McBean Park Drive in Lincoln. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Lincoln High School Farm Foundation, c/o Mr. Pat McCartney, 849 O Street, Lincoln, Calif. 95648, or to a charity of one's own choosing.
