Oakmont's Johnson, Roseville's Gill named soccer MVPs

It was a banner season for the Oakmont boys soccer in 2018–19. As a team, the Vikings won their first league title in since 1992, and now they are racking up the individual awards. Senior striker Zwannah Johnson was named the Foothill Valley League Co-MVP. Johnson, who shared MVP honors with Lincoln goalkeeper Maclean Learned, finished with 25 goals on the season, which was the best in the FVL and top 50 in California. In four of his 19 games, he scored a hat trick. "I started this season with one intention and that was to help my team get as far as possible," Johnson said. "The best thing about this program is the unity on and off the pitch." Johnson plans on attending either Folsom Lake or American River College in the fall to continue his athletic career. "Zwannah is a player that has a ton of potential and we knew that coming into the season," said Oakmont head coach Tom Sinner. "'Z' was one of the players that everyone looked up to as a leader. It was never about the 'I', it was always about the team." Oakmont had five other players achieve All-FVL honors: juniors Christian Barajas, Noah Collins and Pete Gonzalez, and seniors Colby Druckenmiller and Josh Golka. For the Oakmont girls, junior Jaidyn Bohren (11 goals), senior Joelle Pahkim (seven goals) and junior defender Alyssa Renard rounded out the FVL First Team. Roseville's Gill takes home CVC MVP Roseville senior Mackenzie Gill is your Capital Valley Conference girls soccer Most Valuable Player for 2018–19. Gill led Roseville to a 9-0-3 record and a Capital Valley Conference championship. It was the Tigers' first league title in girls soccer since 2013 and the first outright championship since the 2009–10 season when they were members of the Sierra Foothill League. Her 21 goals and 52 points led the CVC while ranking second with 10 assists. The senior had two hat tricks less than three weeks apart this season against McClatchy Jan. 3 and against Yuba City Jan. 23. Roseville earned a No. 5 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs but was upset by No. 12 Lincoln, who rode all the way to the section semifinals, in the first round. Myers leads seven total Hillmen on All-Foothill Valley League Teams Despite missing out on the Sac-Joaquin Section postseason this year, the Placer girls soccer team was well-represented in the All-League department. Placer's junior midfielder Charity Myers took home Co-MVP honors as she led the Lady Hillmen with eight goals, five assists and 21 points. Myers pulled off a hat trick with three goals Jan. 28 against Rio Linda. Myers helped Placer to a 4-4-2 Foothill Valley League mark. Placer was 8-10-4 overall. Joining Myers on the FVL First Team from Placer are junior striker Alexa Sanchez, senior goalie Katie Overby and sophomore midfielder Natalie Jack. Taylor Russell of the FVL champion Ponderosa Bruins was the other Co-MVP. Russell, a junior, had 25 points off of 10 goals and five assists for the 16-3 Lady Bruins, who reached the Division II Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals.
