To comment on Vintage Auburn, contact staff writer Mindy Schiller at mindys@goldcountrymedia.com. 45 years ago April 5, 1974 Grass Valley miss is Livestock Queen Mary Mitchell of Grass Valley — a petite 16-year-old blue-eyed blond — has been selected to reign as Queen of the 28th Annual Grand National Junior Livestock Exposition, at San Francisco's Cow Palace beginning today through 9. The Grass Valley miss competed for the title with 13 other girls ranging in age from 14 to 18 from as far north as Hat Creek in Shasta County and as far south as Hanford in Kings County. All have outstanding record in livestock activities as members of either 4-H or Future Farmers of America, and all will be exhibiting at the Junior Grand National with their own cattle, sheep or swine projects. As Livestock Queen, Mary will preside during the judging, the auction sales, and the Monday night awards banquet sponsored by the Bank of America. She will also make appearances at the regional finals of the California High School Rodeo Association to be held in conjunction with the Junior Grand National on Saturday and Sunday evenings. Mary, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Mitchell, is a junior at Nevada Union high School, where she is active with the Future Farmers of America chapter as well as holding the office of vice president for the Superior Region FFA. She grew up around cattle on her father's 40-acre ranch, and worked from early morning to late at night both with her animals and as a "hand": on the North Star Hereford Ranch near her home. The livestock she has raised include sic Hereford cows and calves, and two steers — one Angus and one Polled Hereford. After high school graduation, the new Junior Grand National Queen plans to attend Cal Poly University at San Luis Obispo, one of the states' outstanding facilities for agricultural education. April 10, 1974: Dear Ann Landers: I was shocked that you would use the name "John" as a substitute for "bathroom." It was an insult to thousands of men whose given name is John. Their kin, I am sure, didn't appreciate it, either. Are you aware that an Apostle was named John, and the Pope who preceded Paul also carried that venerable name? When some clod says he is going to the john, I let him know how I feel about the denigration of what distinguished name and I wish you would, too. A Matter of Good Taste Dear M: If you're upset about John, you must be completely undone about Fanny. According to the World Book Dictionary, "john" is a synonym for "toilet" and "fanny" is the part of your anatomy you're sitting on.
