Locals fare well against national competition at Arcadia Invite

Over the weekend, a select few of the area's best track and field athletes competed with some of the best from nearly 30 states across the country near Pasadena at the Arcadia Invitational. Competing in what has been considered one of the premier prep track invites in the nation, locals more than held their own. Placer High's Shade Sander set yet another school record in the discus with a personal record of 135 feet, 2 inches for fourth place in the event. Sander also took ninth overall in the shot put with a toss of 37-9. Whitney sophomore Sydney Johnson, according to the team's Twitter account, set a school record in the 100-meter hurdles when she ran a 14.64-second, seventh-place time. Johnson also took fourth in the long jump after clearing more than 18 feet for the first time this season. Her 18-10.25 was a also a PR. Johnson's Whitney teammate Rachel Payan cleared 10-07 in the pole vault, which was good for 18th overall in the event. Lincoln's Taylor Lee had a 59.66-second showing in the girls 400, finishing in 30th place. On the boys side, Roseville's Donovan Jones came in fourth in the high jump at 6-05. Jones is still the top high-jumper in the Sac-Joaquin Section with a mark of 6-08. Granite Bay sprinter Tristan Lee placed in the Top 30 in the boys 100 at 11.44 seconds. GLEN POOLE INVITATIONAL Oakmont High School held its annual Glen Poole Invite, and the Viking athletes made sure to hold down their home turf. Oakmont earned first-place finishes from Landon Shea in the 1,600 (a personal record 4:29.30), the 4x400 relay team (3:34.06) of Noah Johnson, Dylan Johnson, Garrett Micheli and Anthony Giammona, who also won the pole vault with a clearance of 12-06. The Viking girls got wins from Ashley Mendenhall, who ran a PR in the 800 (2:21.03), Emma Hirsch, who cleared 5-02 in the high jump, Eliana Baissa, who leaped 17-01.75 in the long jump, and the 4x100 team of Olivia Smith, Rita Di Schiavi, Baissa and Vixie Martinez (50.86). Roseville's 4x400 team of Cierra Bernardy, Alexa Camacho, Analexis Glaude and Madison Sandle claimed the event in 4:09.68. According to the Tigers' Twitter account, Glaude set a school record in the 400 with a PR of 58.60. THUNDER INVITATIONAL Rocklin High held its annual Thunder Invite Saturday with an abundance of top Placer County athletes leading the way. Del Oro varsity boys toppled Whitney and Vanden (76.1-54-37) in the top three spots while Woodcreek beat out West Valley 58-54 in the varsity girls division. Leading the charge for Del Oro were Ryan Mulholland, who set a season-record 22.05 winning time in the boys 100. Mulholland also set a PR in the 400, finishing in second place at 51.32. Chico State-bound Brayden McLaughlin won the 1,600 in 4:21.25 and the 3,200 with a PR of 9:31.55. Caiden Macktinger also set a personal-record 15-02 in the pole vault for the win. Wilson Bean (PR of 39.99) and Ethan Powers (season record of 40.24) went 1-2 in the 300 hurdles for Del Oro. Whitney's Joey Souto set a PR in claiming the boys 400 at 50.35. Souto also finished fourth in 200 (22.96). Other top Wildcat performers included Caveli Hensley, who won the high jump (6-03) and placed fifth in the long jump (20-00.25), and Austin Vasquez and Bennett Woodward, who each took the runner-up spot in the 3,200 and 1,600, respectively. Woodcreek's Maiya Evans sprinted to a girls 100 victory (12.88) and was the anchor for the 4x100-winning team including CJ Blankenship, Valerie Heywood and Kailee Bryant (49.94). The Lady Timberwolves also claimed the 4x400 (4:06.00) as Heywood and Blankenship teamed with Lilly Gregg and Alex Sandoval, who also won the girls 800 in 2:22.65. Lisa Irvine set a season record in the 3,200 as the runner-up at 11:33.81 to help lead Woodcreek to victory. Granite Bay received a strong overall performance from junior Jada Harper, who won the girls long jump (17-00.5) and placed third in the 100 (13.06) and fifth in the 200 (26.91). She also anchored the runner-up 4x100 team which also featured Marit Mulders, Abbie Monk and Alexandra Box (50.28). As for the host Thunder, Rocklin got its lone first-place finish from high-jumper Emily Jagerhorn, who cleared 5 feet. Pearl Burton set a personal record in her runner-up time of 5:18.03 in the 1,600 while Shane Burton had a season record in the boys 1,600 at 4:27.60 for third place. Daniel McElhinney (2:01.14) and Brendan Dowling (2:01.88) each set PRs in the boys 800 and Alexander Way (12-06), Tyler Roberson (11-06) and Mason Munoz (11-06) went 3-4-5, respectively, in the pole vault.
