Carly Bennetts,13 - "We went to Six Flags. My favorite ride was Medusa." Blake Walters,12 - "I went to Epic Skatepark in Rocklin." Cameron Delcastillo, 7 - I played with my friend, Riley." Ty Grimm, 8 - "I played games and I ate pizza." Ashlene Christian, 6 - "I spent the night at my grandma's house, and I played with my cousins, Tasha and Adrian." Raymond Albo, 11 - "I went to Santa Cruz to the Boardwalk. The haunted house was scary." Preparing for the Mother's Day Garden Tour were Audrey and David Haines on their three acres in Loomis. Tickets were available at The Flower Farm in Loomis. Since 1995, Dry Creek Conservancy worked to preserve the creeks and open space in west Placer and north Sacramento counties. Placer County residents are recycling, whether they are aware of it or not. The majority of garbage is recycled at one of the county's two Materials Recovery Facilities. Roseville was proud of its achievement to create sustainable community long before it became a movement. At the second annual "Celebrate the Earth Festival," the city had a chance to heighten awareness about the importance of water and energy conservation. A giant grizzly and polar bear greets you at the door of the Sierra College Natural History Museum. Jack Kreiss is one of the regulars at the Ugly Mug Cafe in Loomis. He enjoys having breakfast five days a week before opening his automotive business. The Capt'n Jack breakfast sandwich was even named for him. Linda "Dee Dee" Lawrence took over ownership of the restaurant after working there for years. She adopted the slogan, "Homestyle grub with a flair." 25 Years Ago April 21, 1994 Services were held for Tom Yoichi Suzuki, 68, a Loomis resident for 20 years. A veteran of the Korean War, he gave 25 years of service with the U.S. Air Force. Suzuki was a retired dispatcher for Formica Corporation. Residents will be able to enjoy Cornish pasties at the 12th annual dinner held at St. Mark's Anglican Episcopal Church in Loomis. The pasties were traditionally part of the meal for Cornish miners. A "Save the Del Oro Pool" wine and beer tasting fundraiser generated $4,300. The event was co-sponsored by Soroptimist International of Rocklin-Loomis and Realty World Hebard Real Estate. Among those enjoying the festivities were Ed Horton, Katie Carlo, Richard Beck, Julie Labrosky, and Marcia and Roy Cornelius. Placer County Board of Supervisors agreed to require that restaurants in the unincorporated parts of the county become 100-percent smoke free. Supervisor Ron Lichau made the motion, citing new evidence that second-hand smoke is harmful. In a 3-2 vote, Supervisors Rex Bloomfield and Alex Ferreira voted with Lichau. Shots were fired at Placer County Sheriff's deputies as they attempted to stop a vehicle on Ridge Road in Newcastle. A passenger stood up through an open sunroof and started shooting at pursuing deputies. No deputies were injured. The vehicle was lost after traveling at speeds well over 100 MPH. Natalie Talbot and Shawn Cowperthwaite were honored with Del Oro Girls Basketball Awards. Richard Mayer of Loomis was honored by UPS for completing 30 years of service as a tractor trailer driver. He and his wife, Bonnie, have five children: Darla, Diane, Darryl, Donna and Denise. The Pioneer Quilters Guild of Rocklin-Loomis, along with the Roseville Quilt Club, sponsored a fashion show and luncheon. The show, entitled "Asian Expressions," focused on the art of Japanese sashiko in which heavy thread is stitched through fabric to form various patterns from simple geometric repeats to elaborately detailed designs. 50 Years Ago April 17, 1969 Army Private 1st Class James Allshouse of Loomis was assigned to the 20th Engineer Brigade as a cook near Long Binh, Vietnam. Army Specialist 4 David Stuck of Rocklin was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge while serving in Vietnam. The badge is one that frontline soldiers wear with special pride. Seaman Apprentice Linda Louise Freeman completed basic training as a Navy Wave. The Del Oro graduate will be reporting to the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Glynco, Georgia. A new electrical cable plant, Alcan Cable, was formally dedicated on April 11 in Sunset-Whitney Ranch. The company is a division of Alcan Aluminum Corporation. The plant was established to meet expanding needs for electrical conductor in the West. It will also contain the first aluminum rod rolling mill in California. Virg Finley and his band will provide the music for the Rocklin Firemen's Dance. David Steven Perednia of Rocklin spent his spring vacation as a volunteer intern in the office of Congressman Harold (Bizz) Johnson. Jose Ramon of King Road, Loomis won a Toyota Corolla car given away at the J.A.C.L. (Japanese American Citizens League) picnic. A six-acre farm recently purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cook on Del Mar Avenue in Loomis had drainage water entering from three sides. Several hundred feet of drain tile needed to be installed before any effective agricultural use could be made on the land. The soils, however, were deep,course sand loam in the Ahwahnee series. The new Del Oro Parents Club officers are Sally Bailey, Al Nitta, Ken Withers and Helen Doolittle. Del Oro seniors Ed Galvan and Jorge Gutierrez received full scholarships to the University of Pittsburg. Ed is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesus Galvan of Loomis. Jorge is the son of Mrs. Ernestine Pineda of Mexico and is living with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ericksen of Loomis. 75 Years Ago April 1944 Services were held for Reverend Edmund Owen, 76, the former Loomis Congregational Church pastor from 1926 to 1932. A native of Wales, he came to America at age 11 with his father who worked as a coal miner in Pennsylvania. Pallbearers for the service were John Ferguson, Albert Law, Al Taylor, William Swetzer and James Law. Reverend E.P Shier of Loomis conducted the service. Harry Colwell rented his vineyard to another party while he worked as a guard at Camp Kohler. He worked much of his life as a fingerprint specialist with enforcement officers. Every child in Placer County will be vaccinated for smallpox for no cost. It is hoped that all children over the age of 9 will be vaccinated so no child need fear smallpox. E.S. Beckett took over the Heggblade-Marguleas Fruit Co. in Penryn and the company is known as the Beckett Fruit Co. Fruit will be sold through the Heggblade-Marguleas Co. The new officers are F.W. Heggblade, E.S. Beckett and A.I. Diepenbrock. Shortage of gasoline led motorists to use fuel "Dopes" reputed to increase mileage. The Bureau of Standards found no beneficial results using the "Dopes," however. Donald Whitney was kicked in the eye by a horse and is lucky to be alive. He is a second-grade student in Miss Adam's class at Loomis School. A raid by the 8th Army Air Force escorted by P-51 Mustang fighters made 75 direct hits on a ball-bearing factory in Berlin. (Standing Guard-oral histories) - Sam Maeda, a local boy, is a drummer with the Down Beat" band at the Tule Lake Internment Camp. Due to the turmoil in camp as a result of the infamous Loyalty Questions, a curfew was put on. The caucasian camp director, Mr. Best, came up with the idea of a "Let's Break Curfew" dance. So the band played and the curfew was broken. Despite 18-year-old Sam's allegiance to this country, he still feels anger toward the U.S. government for interring people of Japanese ancestry. Sam's family moved to Penryn in 1932. His father died in 1936, leaving his widowed mother with six children. An uncle in Japan offered to raise Sam's older sisters, so they moved to Japan. When the order to evacuate in 1942 came, Sam was finishing his senior year at Placer High School.
