Roseville bids farewell to Officer Landon

With much grief and a lingering sense of disbelief, the police community bid farewell to Marine Corps veteran and Roseville Police Department Officer Cameron Landon, who died in his sleep on July 16 at age 36. While Stanford Ranch Road was relatively quiet leading up to Bayside Adventure Christian Church, a few area residents came out to show support for Landon, who joined the Roseville Police Department in 2015. Diane Thompson of Rancho Cordova, her mother and another member of a Sacramento area group that honors law enforcement officers were there. Thompson said she was compelled to actively show her respect and joined a litany of law enforcement support groups on Facebook after the death of a Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy late last year. "I just wanted to show support for all Leo's (law enforcement officer's), especially the fallen," Thompson said. "It's sad that he (Landon) had to pass so young. It all started with our Deputy Mark Stasyuk in Rancho Cordova last September. That's when it really hit me because it only happened five minutes away from my home." For Roseville Police Department spokesman Rob Baquera, attention has turned toward supporting Landon's family. Landon is survived by his wife and two sons, ages 4 and 2. "The Roseville Police Department stands with the family in their time of need," Baquera said. "This is a tragic loss that affects many. We'll continue to support the family any way possible." Baquera added that the department doesn't plan to release any other details regarding a cause of death. For what was the second time in as many months, Bayside Adventure Christian Church held a memorial service for a police officer. On June 27, the memorial service for slain Sacramento City Police Department Officer Tara O'Sullivan was held. O'Sullivan was fatally shot the night of June 19 in Sacramento after responding to a domestic abuse disturbance. In a prepared statement by family, which was shared last week by the Grass Valley Police Department, Landon was described as "a loving and devoted family man, a proud Marine and a loyal and passionate community servant." A Grass Valley native, Landon graduated from Nevada Union High School in 2001, then attended Santa Barbara City College and later earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Phoenix, the statement read. Landon completed a tour of Iraq during his service with the U.S. Marine Corps from 2005 to 2009. Upon his return from the service, Landon began his law enforcement career as a correctional officer for the Nevada County Sheriff's Department. He then joined the Grass Valley Police Department in 2013 before relocating to the Roseville Police Department in 2015. The statement noted loved ones knew him as just "Cam," and described him as a "fun-loving, funny and dependable guy who was happiest when he was with his family and friends."
