Motorcycle rider dies in crash

A collision Thursday between a car and motorcycle on a rural road north of Auburn killed a Grass Valley man. The victim was identified by the Highway Patrol as Grass Valley resident Justin Schuler. The crash took place on Placer Hills Road at Crother Road. The "T" intersection is about 6 miles north of Auburn in Applegate. A photo from the scene released by the Highway Patrol shows a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the ground next to a Subaru Outback crossover. The photo shows the crossover with damage to the driver's side door. According to the Highway Patrol's Auburn office, Schuler's 1988 Harley Davidson was approaching the intersection at a high rate of speed when the Subaru pulled out from Crother Road after making a complete stop to make a left turn onto Placer Hills Road. The driver — a Meadow Vista resident — saw the motorcycle approaching in the middle of the road and stopped in the roadway to avoid a collision. She told the Highway Patrol that the motorcycle attempted to turn away from the Subaru while braking. "Due to his high rate of speed, (Schuler) was unable to stop in time and the motorcycle collided with the left side of the crossover," the Highway Patrol reported. Schuler was thrown off the motorcycle into the roadway and died at the scene of the crash, the Highway Patrol said. The crash took place shortly after 8 p.m. The driver of the Outback was uninjured, according to the report.
