Body of Roseville man found near Chico was Woodcreek graduate

The body of a missing California State University, Chico student from Roseville was found Aug. 29 in the Sacramento River, according to the Butte County Sheriff's Office. Anthony Mahr, 22, was reported missing on Aug. 20 after he went floating in the Sacramento River, officials said. The Butte County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit recovered Mahr's body at about 10:40 a.m. Aug. 29, roughly a quarter mile upstream from Scotty's Boat Landing, according to a press release. A fisherman had reported seeing a body in the river near Scotty's Boat Landing, which is about six miles west from the Chico State University campus, the press release said. Butte County Sheriff's Office public information officer Megan McMann said all the waterways are moving very fast at this time of year and are considered to be dangerous. According to a Facebook post by the Chico State Police Department, Mahr graduated from Woodcreek High School where he was a star athlete for the football team all four years. He graduated in 2016, according to maxpreps.com. Kyle Stowers, head football coach for Woodcreek from 2013 to 2018, coached Mahr his junior and senior years. For Stowers, Mahr's determination stood out most to him. While Mahr was considered small compared to other players in the league, Stowers noted his love of football and determination set him apart. "It's just devastating," Stowers said. "We have a lot of kids who come and go through this school. There are certain kids who you coach that stick with you… It's just devastating for our community, our school and especially because he was so young with his whole life ahead of him." Mahr was a business administration major and transferred from Butte College to Chico State in spring 2019, according to the post by Chico State Police. McMann said Butte County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident and the cause of death will be released, pending an autopsy report.
