FLC women's soccer handles Modesto, 6-1

The Folsom Lake College Falcons got off the bus ready to play on Friday afternoon, then rolled to a convincing 6-1 win over the Pirates at Modesto JC. The visitors controlled possession from the early moments of the match while creating numerous scoring chances, but it wasn't until freshman Michaela Clark and sophomore Sarah Freed scored nearly back-to-back goals at the midway point of the first half that the Falcons took control of the scoreboard. With a 2-0 lead at halftime, the Falcons broke it open with two quick goals early in the second half – one by Emily Doty and another by Freed – and never looked back. Freed's second goal tied her for the team lead with Clark at eight for the season. Freshmen Caroline Guthrie and Danielle Powell – her first as a Falcon - added second-half goals to complete the scoring binge. With Kalyn Amezcua, Maddie Wright, Dani Powell, Hailey Green, and Payton Zanatta all chipping in as major contributors off the bench in the second half, the Falcons were never threatened. The Falcons will host Diablo Valley on Tuesday night at 6 p.m., then won't be back at Falcon Stadium until October 15. Men's soccer The Falcons faced off against the team (Delta College) with which they shared the 2018 Big 8 title on Friday afternoon in Stockton, and neither team was able to find the net as they battled to a 0-0 tie. Both teams were reluctant to take many chances, instead opting to play a conservative brand of soccer while hoping for a mistake by the opposition. The strategy nearly paid off for the Falcons, who were able to create some opportunities but had three shots hit the post. FLC coach Justin Johnson had praise sophomore defender Andrew Ratto, who earned 'Man of the Match' recognition for his efforts. The Falcons' schedule does not get any easier with a gauntlet of Big 8 teams boasting early season success awaiting. They'll host Modesto (6-1-1, 0-1 in Big 8) on Tuesday afternoon, then play at American River (4-2-2, 1-0 in Big 8) on Friday. Women's volleyball After having three of their last four matches go to a deciding fifth set (and very nearly all four matches), the Falcons went to Modesto on Friday and made quick work of the Pirates, winning in straight sets, 25-11, 25-11, 25-21. It was a balanced effort from the entire squad, including several who have seen limited playing time this season. Setter Kennedy Crawford set the tone early, serving six straight points to start the match 6-0. She did even better in the second set, as the Falcons started 11-0. Caitlin Dillon and Julin Kenison led the team with nine kills each, Crawford recorded 29 assists, and libero Maddie Pearce tallied 12 digs. The Falcons improved to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in Big 8 play. They'll host Delta College (10-4, 2-0) – ranked one spot ahead of the Falcons at No. 9 in California – on Wednesday evening at Falcon Gym.
