Silent movie 'The Freshman' will have audiences laughing outloud

Silver Screen Classic Movie Series continues on Saturday, Dec. 7, with "The Freshman," from 1925. Convinced he's hip and charismatic, college freshman Harold Lloyd will do anything to be popular at Tate College. He thinks he's the bee's knees, and he tries too hard. So everyone laughs at him as do audiences. Clearly Lloyd has to replace the current big man on campus, the football captain. Can he really? Of course he can — or so he believes. But as anticipated, the more he struggles, the more problems he has, even though he's convinced he's doing everything right. This movie illustrates one of Lloyd's theories of what makes a movie funny: "The more trouble you get a man into, the more comedy you get out of him." This silent movie, with live piano music will show at noon, 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. in the Beecher Room of the Auburn Library, 350 Nevada St. in Auburn. Presented by the library, the movie is free.
