Gilbert Duran remembered

Gilbert Duran, who died on Aug. 4 at age 92, is remembered for his community service. Duran was very active in the Roseville community, according to Roseville City School Board member Gary Miller. In 1960, Duran first taught in Roseville at Atlantic Street School. He transferred to the new Warren T. Eich Middle School, where he taught math, history, art and Spanish until retiring in 1986. Duran's community service included founding the Roseville Athletic Club in 1961 so girls had a sport to be involved in. The Roseville Athletic Club evolved into the Roseville Gazelles Boys and Girls Running Team, which won 11 national championships during his tenure as coach. He was a Roseville City Councilman from 1972 to 1978, Roseville vice-mayor from 1974 to 1976 and a former Roseville Teachers Association president. Duran also belonged to the Latin American Social and Political Organization and served on the Placer County Grand Jury, Roseville City School Board and Roseville's Project Review Commission. In 2014, the city of Roseville dedicated a park to Duran and his wife, Helen, to honor their dedication to the Roseville community. In his 60s, Duran ran two marathons, competed in the Bay to Breakers and multiple 5K and 10K fun runs. In addition, Duran was a member of the oldest team in Eppie's Great Race, the Over The Hill And Moving Still team. Duran is survived by his five children, Gilbert Jr. (Laura); Robert (Debbie), Celia (Brian), Julianne (John), and Michelle (Rick); his grandchildren, Shelby, Justin, Stacy, Morgan, Kristin, Erin, Lauren, Caitlyn, Jacob, Robert, Lindsay, Michael and Adrianna, and great-grandchildren, Braeden, Nathan and Ashton.
