Colfax's Martel, Placer's Hodgdon finish 1-2 in slalom

Colfax's Karina Martel and Placer's Sophia Hodgdon went 1-2 in Monday's California-Nevada Interscholastic Ski & Snowboard Federation Central II third slalom race of the season held at Boreal Ridge. Martel, who has won five of the six Central II races this season, won the competition with a swift two-run effort of 1 minute, 14.01 seconds. Hodgdon was second in a strong effort of 1:17.55. The next top local area finisher was Placer's Macy Maddox, who was 13th in 1:46.45. In boys racing, Colfax's Gary Thomas led local finishers with a sixth-place finish in a time of 1:22.68. Also for Colfax, Ben Schwartz was 15th in 1:35.74, Noah Franscella 17th in 1:39.10 and Ben Ferguson 18th in 1:39.53. In Central I slalom competition at Alpine Meadows, Del Oro's Sam Wood was second in the boys race in 1:03.32. Teammate Dane Nelson finished eighth in 1:08.97. Girls racing in Central I saw Del Oro's Zara Streng finish second in 1:04.99 and Clair Matson fifth in 1:10.66. Suddjian paces Central II snowboarding In one of the closest races of the season, Colfax's Tyler Suddjian used a strong finish on his second run of the day to capture Monday's CNISSF Central II boys giant slalom race held at Northstar-at-Tahoe. Suddjian trailed Truckee's Zac Kuch by more than a second after the first run of the day but battled back to take top honors in 1:53.30 to Kuch's 1:53.83. The victory was Suddjian's fifth of the season. Other top area finishers were Colfax's Ryan Donovan (4th, 2:02.17), Placer's Evan Bond (6th, 2:12.16) and Colfax's Drew Garcia (7th, 2:12.37). In girls racing, North Tahoe's Nina Burt continued her dominance with a first-place time of 2:08.26. Sophia Nunez of Placer was second in 2:16.13 while Faith Mora of Colfax placed third in 2:21.59. Chloe Qualls of Colfax was sixth in 2:30.03, Kaitlyn Simpson of Colfax eighth in 2:31.57 and Savannah Basque of Placer 10th in 2:35.70. In Central I boys action, Del Oro's James Burton (1:18.09) and Jaxon Sutter (1:19.69) placed 1-2 in boys racing at Alpine Meadows.
