Elizabeth Jansen remembered

"She loved to go to Baja (California) to fish almost every single year and she loved to golf," said Elizabeth Jansen, her daughter.Despite growing up during the Great Depression, Barbara Jansen was able to take a trip on the Queen Mary during its maiden voyage when she was 16.That trip, which lasted more than a year, took her all over the world and her experiences included seeing the coronation of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and riding camels across Egypt.After graduating from Sacramento High School, Barbara Jansen went to Stanford University, where she met her future husband, Jarol.It took some time until the two were married, as Jarol was called to duty during World War II but Barbara Jansen waited for him and they were married in 1946, at which time they moved to Jarol's hometown of Lincoln."It was a quieter, gentler time when people spent their leisure activities together at things like Rotary parties and painting the Scout Hall," Elizabeth Jansen said.The Jansens had two children, Elizabeth and her brother Richard, and two grandchildren, Kate and Leigh Jansen.The couple loved spending their lives involved in the community, Elizabeth Jansen said.The couple was married for 58 years when Jarol died in 2004, according to their daughter.Memorial services for Barbara Jansen will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church at Sixth and I streets.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Friends of the Library or the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.Brandon Darnell can be reached by e-mail at brandond@goldcountrymedia.com.
