Sac County jails to release over 400 inmates

Hundreds of inmates who have 60 days or less remaining on their sentence will be released early from Sacramento County jails amid the novel coronavirus outbreak, the sheriff's office said Wednesday.The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office received an order on Wednesday afternoon to plan the release of inmates as they feel it is in the best interest of public health to reduce the population in the jail system.The sheriff's office said no inmate whose offense includes one or more of the following will be eligible for release:Domestic violence or an offense involving a victim of domestic violenceDriving under the influence of alcohol or drugsAn offense that requires registration as a sex offenderAs a result, 421 inmates who are being housed in the Sacramento County Main Jail in Sacramento and the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center in Elk Grove will be released on or before the March 30 deadline.The sheriff's office previously discontinued visitation at both jails as a way to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
