10 Years Ago July 22, 2010 A memorial service was held for Sadaye (Lily) Oseto, 84. She was preceded in death by her husband, Osamu Oseto, daughter, Shirley Ann Hayward, and brothers, Min and Aki Hirota. She was survived by her children, Victor, Barbara, George, and David Oseto and Lynda Sasaki. With triple-digit heat, local children enjoying the Del Oro community swimming pool included Robbie, 10, and his sister, Kayla Luongo, 8, of Newcastle. Michael Reader, 5, was learning how to swim with the help of instructor Liz Scherer. Betsy, a 23-year-old burro owned by Shannon and Bob McClurg of Penryn, was suffering from burns caused by someone spraying chemicals on her. Five years ago Betsy suffered a similar acid attack. The McLaughlin Theater presented "Thoroughly Modern Millie" with 21 local youth ranging in age from 9 to 19. Abrianna Keller, 14, said, "It's a great story, really funny. It has a surprise ending." Other cast members included Emily Knisley, Kate Meyer, Kelly Ann Dunn, Sierra Zellmer, Makenzie Kirkwood, Laura Gentes and Karley Broadbent. Kyle Brady served shaved ice from his portable business in front of the Blue Goose Fruit Shed in Loomis. Among his customers was Karen Leeson, riding into town on Zachary, an Arabian horse. She was accompanied by Betty Thomas riding a paint gelding, Preacher Boy. The Del Oro High School junior varsity trap team earned a first-place and the varsity team third out of more than 400 trap shooters at the California Scholastic Trap Shooting finals. Whooping cough cases in Placer County have more than tripled, compared to the same period last year. Newborns are at the greatest risk for severe illness. It is important that everybody who will be around a newborn is vaccinated. The landmark Valencia Club in Penryn reopened but not exactly in a legal manner. A man had a four-day career as a proprietor of the historic bar by passing himself off as the new owner. He served beer and other alcoholic beverages to customers happy to see the bar open again. 25 Years Ago July 20, 1995 Services were held for Alfrehdo Dublin, 56, a native of Stockton. A Rocklin resident, Dublin had worked for AT&T in Telecommunications for 25 years. He was a Vietnam veteran, having served in the Air Force. Marine Lance Cpl. Adam Steinhart, a 1994 Del Oro High School graduate, completed Basic Aviation Structural Mechanic Course at the Naval Air Station in Millington, Tennessee. Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Michael Wiens, a 1994 Del Oro graduate, graduated from recruit training. He is the son of Sue Helwick of Rocklin. Mark Davis of Loomis serves as president of the Placer County Fair Board for his second term. Among the activities at the fair in Roseville was the goat milking contest. Loomis Mayor Mike Boberg, along with Councilmen Bruce Lee and Gary Gade, took part in the event. Angela Cabral of Roseville was crowned the 1995 Placer County Fair Queen with Stacey Meyers of Loomis, first runner-up and Holly Bowling of Penryn, "Miss Congeniality." Honored on the Dean's List at North Park College of Chicago is Michael O'Sullivan of Loomis. Tawna Gresko, a recent Del Oro graduate, earned the George D. Smith Scholarship awarded to children of UPS employees. Showing their rabbits during the Placer County Fair included Morgan Adams, Nora Huckaba, Stephanie Swanson, Glenda Reyman and Nathan Adams. Local residents who want fresh produce but can't make it to a farmers market can become members of Community Supported Agriculture, a partnership between local farmers and consumers. The member buys a share, or percentage, of the farm's harvest. The cost of a share of fruits and vegetables typically runs $10 to $15 a week for two to five people. Several Placer County students spent five weeks studying in Costa Rica in a program sponsored through Sierra College. Don Hogland wrote about his experience, "The people I've met are without exception kind, courteous, helpful and honest. If one becomes confused by the local currency and pays too much for an item, the shopkeeper quickly returns the overpayment. Having a standing army is banned by the Constitution. They seem to work out their problems without one." 50 Years Ago July 16, 1970 U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Myrl F. Glenn of Loomis is a weapons mechanic at George Air Force Base, California assigned to the 4535th Combat Crew Training Squadron. Airman Glenn is a 1969 Del Oro High School graduate. A total of 83 prize-winning animals were sold at the Placer County Fair. The auction was opened to the top 28 beef animals, 5 swine, and 50 quality lambs rated "choice" or better. Competing for the Maid of Placer County Beauty Contest during the Placer County Fair were Kathy Lopez and Debbie Koberlein of Rocklin, Laura Wynn of Lincoln, Claudia Mire and Sheryl Ladner of Auburn, and Tiny Blalock of Roseville. A special R.J. Kennedy Breakfast was held at the Gold Rush Plaza in Auburn. Kennedy is seeking election as assemblyman for the 6th District. Conservative forecasts point to air traffic tripling during this decade. The U.S. leads in the design and manufacturing of commercial jet transports. However, there is a challenge from the British-French SST, the Concorde and the Russian SST, the TU 144. Donald Cooper, son of Mrs. John Lewelling (Carmen Cooper) of Newcastle, was reported getting along fine after undergoing major surgery. Motor vehicle owners are aware of the "pink slip" showing ownership. As of July, 1970, a new "yellow slip" is also mailed to every person acquiring a California registered vehicle. The purpose of the new document designed by the DMV is to tell all when you stop owning a vehicle. July 20 will be the first anniversary of man's landing on the moon when astronaut Neil Armstrong uttered the now-famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin joined Armstrong 18 minutes later on the lunar surface to read a plaque with the inscribed words, "Here Men From the Planet Earth First Set Foot Upon the Moon, July 1969, A.D. We Came In Peace For All Mankind." 75 Years Ago July 1945 Services were held for Alvin Frost, 59, a native of Dutch Flat. He was one of the first two forest rangers for the State Division of Forestry. At the time of his death, Frost was the oldest forest ranger in California in length of service and age. First Lt. Joe Festersen is due to enter a combat theater in the Pacific as a pilot of a B-29 Superfortress. He is the husband of Mrs. Kay Festersen and father of Miss Kay Festersen. Benny Defuentes, U.S. Army, of Rocklin, returned home on furlough. He was a prisoner of war in Germany for 6 months and spent 3 months in a hospital in England. More than 2 years before Hitler invaded Poland and 4 1/2 years before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Chiang Kai Shek and his country of China began the heroic struggle against Japan. By all odds, the Chinese should have collapsed. However, after 8 years of ceaseless fighting, the Chinese were fighting back more effectively. President Truman declared June 26, 1945, "Could be a great day in history when the United Nations Charter was signed in San Francisco. It depended on if there was a cooperation among the nations. The World Charter would give the United Nations Organization a strength which the old League of Nations never enjoyed since we chose to snub the League in 1919," said the president. While Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Kane were enjoying a rodeo in Reno, a fire completely destroyed their home 4 miles south of Loomis. A neighbor, Mrs. Bertha Fisher, reported the fire but it was too late to prevent the destruction. The Rocklin boys, behind pitcher Frank Rodas, defeated the Y.M.C.A. baseball team 12-1 at the Loomis Ball Park. Marlyn Morrill hit the only home run. Harold Bywater resigned as night watchman in Loomis and Pat O'Brien was hired to fill that capacity. The Loomis Motor Company was destroyed by fire. The fire was, however, controlled within the walls of the garage, but cars under repair and a new Chevrolet truck were destroyed. The business was operated in the Mehl Building by Nick Mangiarcina, who had purchased it from Rico Quindotti of Newcastle in August of 1944. Nick and his employee, Bill Ramsey, were uncertain about their future plans. The building, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Mehl, was built in 1920 and also housed the sales department of Mehl's Chevrolet.
