Richard W. Bartholow (Buff) 5/21/1944 - 7/26/2020

Richard W. Bartholow passed away in his Grass Valley home on July 26, 2020, with his two daughters by his side. He was 76 years old. Richard, also known as "Dick" or "Buff" (short for Buffalo) was born in Sacramento to Ida Gertrude (Booher) Bartholow and Clayton Wayne Bartholow and went to elementary and middle school in Elk Grove. He worked in construction in the Sacramento area for several years before being drafted to the Army in 1965. He was one of the 648,500 draftees who served in Vietnam and Richard was stationed as an Operating Engineer – Specialist Four with the 173rd Airborne. On October 22, 1965, weeks before leaving for basic training, he married Jacqulyn Newton, whom he remained married to for 45 years, until her death in 2010. Richard is also preceded in death by both of his parents and his younger brother, Russel Bartholow. He left behind his sisters, Iris Sandidge and Vonda Morris, both his children, Jessica Bartholow and Linda (Bartholow) Estabrook, his grandchildren, Callan Ivy and Oscar Ivy; son-in-law Nathan Ivy and many friends and extended family who loved him and delighted in his genuinely unique character. Richard enjoyed fishing in Northern California's lakes and rivers, riding motorcycles, hunting, camping, playing cards and mining for gold. Richard will be laid to rest with Jacqulyn at the National Cemetery in Sacramento. His family has asked that donations in Richard's name be made to the Forgotten Soldier Program (https://forgottensoldierprogram.com/) where he received services to help him learn skills to live more fully despite suffering with a debilitating case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, there will be no memorial or funeral service. Richard will receive a military honors ceremony at the National Cemetery in Sacramento during the month of December.
