Jay Dea Butterworth

Passed away July 30, 2020 at the age of 94. Jay and his family were Auburn pioneers and Jay lived in Auburn for 85 + years. Jay was the youngest school bus driver at 17, for Auburn School District.Jay graduated Auburn High School in 1943 and went on to Placer Jr. College. Jay enlisted in the US Airforce in 1944 and served with honor. After the Airforce, Jay worked with Auburn Phillips Oil Co. for 35 years.Jay was a devoted outdoorsman. He loved fishing, hunting and became an expert in the mining and mineral industry. He worked as a Mineral Exploration Consultant until he was 89 years old.Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Dea and Cleo Butterworth. His sisters June Divine, Marilyn Gray and his beloved wife of 56 years, Lillian Osborne Butterworth, his business colleague and lifelong friend Evan Sleeman.He is survived by his dearly loved step-daughter Kathy Tall and grandchildren, Brenda, Kevin, Amy and Heather.He was very devoted to his beloved niece Phyllis Chappell (Gerald), and spent the last five years of his life with her in Sonoma County.He is also survived by his nephew Tom Gray (Kathy), great niece, Tracy Spencer (Kenny) great nephews Kelly Jay Chappell, Caden, Skyler, Brighton and Randon Gray and his beloved friends LaVerne and Don Moran.Private grave side services are planned at Old Auburn Cemetery. Donations to Alzheimer's Assoc is preferred.
