10 Years Ago Sept. 9, 2010 Services were held for Barbara Jean Nunes, 69, an Idaho native and a Loomis resident. She retired after 29 years as a registered nurse at Roseville Community Hospital. Nunes enjoyed gardening, sharing her produce and helping her husband, Don, with their hobby, cattle ranching. Don Nunes was a former Placer County Sheriff. Services were held for William Blake Sainsbury, 51, a San Francisco native and a Loomis resident. He was employed for more than 20 years as a Roseville Parks and Recreation supervisor. A life-long learner, Sainsbury was an avid reader of self improvement, healthy living, parenting and spy novels. He enjoyed cooking, camping and hiking the trails of Northern California. Del Oro High School Principal Dan Gayaldo estimated 4,000 to 6,000 people turned out for the two-day "Battle at the Capital" football tournament. The event featured six games, military color guards, a military fly-over, 45 booths and a resource fair. Mark Soto, a JV coach, was instrumental in organizing pre-game events honoring military members. Soto's son, Joshua, was just deployed to Afghanistan with the Marine Corps. Another son, Benjamin, just returned from Iraq as a member of the Army. Aly Duffin, Bailey Humes and Belle Obert were dominant players on the Del Oro Volleyball team as it won its first seven matches. Anytime Fitness in Penryn offers free Kid-Fit courses to help youngsters stay healthy and fit. Ron Texeira and his wife, Mary Arbegast, run the gym. Randy Gustafson, a certified personal trainer, created the sessions. Among the local kids getting a workout include Tiffany Gibson, Cole Gustafson, Savannah Fahning, Christian Johnson, Evan Gustafson, Makena Sears and Micah Mekebri. When salmon make their journey upstream from the ocean and through the Sacramento River, many make their way to the Secret Ravine Salmon Habitat in the Loomis Basin Regional Park to spawn. Secret Ravine Creek is part of the Dry Creek system and it is the tributary where about 80 percent of the fish spawn. Although Secret Ravine is an officially-protected habitat for 10 years, the fish have been coming to the creek for thousands of years. 25 Years Ago Sept. 12, 1995 Services were held for George William Galloway, 69, an Idaho native and a Loomis resident. A veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army Air Force, he was a member of the American Legion Post in Loomis. Services were held for Dan Steven Morillas, 44, an Auburn native. He was a carpenter for the Morillas Construction Company for 23 years. A 1969 Del Oro High School graduate, Morillas played football on his high school team and then on the Sierra College team. Richard Hinojosa, 48, of Rocklin drowned on El Dorado Creek while gold mining. It appeared that he was pinned under water when a large boulder dislodged. Hinojosa was employed as a state correctional officer at Folsom Prison. P.E.A.C.E. for families, Roseville's domestic violence and sexual-assault intervention program, is celebrating its shelter grand opening. The shelter is for battered women and their children located in Old Town Roseville. Patty Davis is in charge of tickets for the Del Oro High School Class of 1975's 20-year reunion. The event will be at the Sierra View Country Club in Roseville. Sierra College graduate Stacey Stewart tried out the new universal Automated Teller machine installed by Placer Savings Bank. The new system was coordinated by Sierra College President Devin Ramirez, Vice President John DeLury, bookstore manager Nilo Velasquez and David Trimble of Placer Savings Bank. The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus is celebrating its 125th year of providing entertainment for children of all ages. Larry Welden of Loomis and his son, Jay, have their paintings featured in a show at the Hyatt Regency Plaza in Sacramento. Their works feature watercolor landscapes of mountain subjects and most of their paintings are done outdoors on location. Mt. Ralston, Lover's Leap, Pyramid Peak, and Horsetail Falls are among the displays. Dr. Brad Thompson, a family practitioner and a Sutter Medical Group member, opened a practice on Fairway Drive in Rocklin. Mrs. Bernice Pate of Auburn donated 400 pieces of Native American art, valued at more than $100,000, to the Placer County Department of Museums. The artifacts will be displayed in the Placer County Courthouse museum. Placer County's 1995 State Fair Exhibit was voted the "People's Choice." The 34-foot-high walk-in mountain exhibit included a real waterfall, a see-through overhead lake with live fish and numerous animated figures. 50 Years Ago Sept. 3, 1970 Services were held for Howard Ogden, 81, a You Bet native in Nevada County and a Loomis resident for 50 years. Ogden was manager of the Loomis Lumber Company where he had been employed for 32 years. Ogden was a charter member of the Loomis Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Calendyne; sons, Jack, Frank and Shannon; and a sister, Eloise. Areno. The 1970 Tahoe Cattlemen's Field Day was held at Bickford Cattle Company in Lincoln with Jim Bickford hosting the event. Featured was a demonstration of the Modern Look at Beef Cattle. The Placer Nevada Cowbelles served a beef lunch and had association members bring their branding irons. A display of brands is being planned for the 1970 Grand National Livestock Exposition at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Peter Hawkins, a Newcastle cattleman, will supervise the fire and branding activities at that event. Rocklin residents can call Roseville and vice-versa for no cost as the 10-cent toll rate was eliminated. The same is true for Loomis telephone subscribers calling south Placer towns. The south Placer unit of the American Cancer Society topped its 1970 goal of $1,650 by more than $300. Local chairwomen included Mrs. John Tuttle of Penryn, Vivian Adams of Loomis, Mrs. Bindie Orsolini of Newcastle, Mrs. Jolly Goulds of Hidden Valley, Mrs. Betty Swanson and Mrs. Bess Wacholtz of Rocklin. It will be slim pickings for Labor Day fishermen over most of Northern California as only a few fish are in sight, according to the P.G.&E. Stream Scouts report. A total of 952 students will start school at Del Oro High School's opening day on Sept. 10. It is the largest registration in the school's history, according to Principal Rod Hamilton. The freshman class will be the largest ever at 275 while the faculty is fewer in number with a total of 31, resulting in capacity classes. On opening day, Student Body President Mike Gade will lead the flag salute. 75 Years Ago August 1945 Services were held for Thomas Huhtala, 84, a Finland native and a Rocklin resident for 57 years. A retired quarry operator, Huhtala was a Finnish Brotherhood member. Navy Baker 2nd Class Robert Bottomley was presented with a Bronze Star for gallantry while serving aboard the USS Abner Read. His destroyer went down in the battle of Leyte Gulf. Bottomley was struck by his anti-aircraft gun in the face of strafing attacks by enemy planes. Bottomley was wounded by a Kamikaze plane, the same plane which sank the Read. His family includes a brother, James Bottomley of Rocklin, and a sister, Mrs Art Berggren of Loomis. Dr. Paul Barnes of Loomis, a veteran Scout, gave medical checkups for all Scouts at Camp Pahatsi. About 60 day-haul workers a day were brought into the county to relieve the labor problems for 20 growers. It is the farmers' responsibility to pick up the men used on their farm without fail. Lee Jacobson, Jr. is home for a visit. Master Sgt. Jacobson had been in action in the Pacific with the U.S. Marines. The new fire truck for the Loomis Fire Department can pump 500 gallons of water a minute. The 25 firemen, all volunteers, are Chief Garrett Doty, Earl Vance, Al Fieser, Art Stokes, Wes Gary, Robert Bock, Nick Mangiarcina, Jack Ogden, Howard Ogden, Lin Nelthorpe, R.B. Ferguson, Paul Sagaser, Merl Coburn, Don Venturi, Harvey Carlisle, John Brace, Chas. Turner, Ed Rippey, Robert Todd, Frank Montero, Robert Tudsbury, Frank Nute, Wes Barnes, Fred Hamberg and W.E. Court. The new sugar stamp will maintain the ration of 5 pounds for 4 months. The fruit season was at its peak on August 4 to August 5 when 25 cars were shipped from the Loomis Southern Pacific Depot. The Battle for Leyte Gulf in late October 1944 resulted in the destruction of what was left of the Japanese Navy and a signal that the war in the Pacific was nearing an end. The naval battle was the largest in history with more ships involved, more men fought and more men killed in the widest stretch of water that ever staged a naval fight. Without a fleet, the Japanese homeland was cut off, people starved and were exposed to American air attacks. American B-29's firebombed 60 cities, including Tokyo where an estimated 260,000 homes were destroyed and 100,000 people died. In desperation, the Japanese military used manned torpedoes (Kaiten) and manned rocket bombs (Ohka); Kamikaze pilots used twin-engine long range bombers.
