10 Years Ago Nov. 11, 2010 Sherrie Doupnik Edgar, volunteer director of the Loomis Basin Christmas Basket program, said "KIDS CAN" boxes were delivered to local schools so students could donate food items. Three generations of the Doupnik family have been in charge of the all-volunteer effort for eight years. On Dec. 18, hundreds of volunteers will sort food and filling boxes at the Gary Doupnik Mfg. warehouse. Last year, 283 families received food boxes and toys. Chloe, a Loomis Labrador retriever that suffered chemical burns, has found a new home at Homeward Bound, a golden retriever rescue and sanctuary. Two former Loomis servicemen honored the fallen on Veterans Day. Tom Seth is a veteran who served in Europe during the Korean War. "Someone has to stand up and represent those who didn't come back," he said. Howard Dack, a Master Gunnery Sergeant in the Marine Reserves, was activated to serve in a combat support group in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and finally as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Djibouti, Africa at an anti-terrorism base. His wife, Lisa, said, "The families have had to make sacrifices. The kids give up their dads." R.W. Hampton was the featured performer for the 16th annual Cowpoke Fall Gathering at the historic Blue Goose Fruit Shed in Loomis. Bert Braun, Fall Gathering founder, along with his wife, Carol, said, "Hampton's new release 'Austin to Boston' serves his beautiful baritone voice." The lineup of cowboy poets, singers, and storytellers included Pat Richardson, Larry Maurice, Bill Brewster, Jeff Severson, Jeralynn Strong and John Kintz. Residents were asked, "Who do you honor on Veterans Day?" Mac Tiner - "My great uncle, Theo Brandon, served in World War II." Megan Anderson -"Kristen Duff graduated from Del Oro and served in the Army in Iraq. She suffered a traumatic head injury there." Kelli Benedict - "My father-in-law, Robert Benedict, served in the Navy. My brother-in-law, Steven Benedict, served in Vietnam." Deann Eller -"My father, Dean Jongewaard, served in the Navy during the Korean war. He never even knew how to swim." Edward Whitaker - "My dad, Eugene Whitaker, served on a submarine during World War II. He would never talk about it." Rob Rash -"My uncles, Charles Putt, who received the Silver Star, and William Flint, were both in the Battle of Midway during World War II. Neither one would talk about it." 25 Years Ago Nov. 2, 1995 Services were held for Blanche Elliott, 91, a Berkeley native and a Placer County resident for the past 20 years. She was a retired legal stenographer, working in the legal profession for more than 30 years. Kimberly Frazier, a 1994 Del Oro High School graduate, completed the traffic management coordinator course at Fort Eustis, Newport News, Virginia. Army Reserve Private Patrick McCollum, a 1992 Del Oro graduate, received basic training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. Air Force Airman Randy Welker of Loomis completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Navy Fireman Eric Haus of Rocklin was deployed aboard the guided missile frigate USS Fahrion during a multinational exercise in South America. Navy Hospitalman Apprentice Robert Mochel, a 1993 Del Oro graduate, completed the Field Medical Service Technician Course. The Loomis Area Insurance Services Agency, founded by long-time Loomis resident Jim Makimoto, merged with Warren G. Bender Company and moved its office to Sacramento. A 20-year reunion was held at Roseville's Sierra View Country Club for the Del Oro High School Class of 1975. Committee members organizing the event were Ray Hirota, Stu Kageta, Bill Imamoto, Patty Batts Davis, Myra Yamashiro Okasaki, Maureen Otani Brown, Laura DuPriest, Kim Cairny Spear and Mark Jabush. Mrs. Rita Leinecke will be installed as Worthy Matron Elect of Heber Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. She invited two officers of Bethel No. 336 International Order of Job's Daughters to participate in the Bible Escort portion of her installation ceremony. At a meeting of the Job's Daughters in the Roseville Masonic Temple, Senior Princess Kelly Godwin and Junior Princess Amy Garnett volunteered for the honor. The Loomis Redhots U-14 soccer team defeated the Roseville Hurricanes 2-0 with goals by Jennifer Morris and Rani James. Not allowing the opposing team to score were goal tenders Nicki Matcalf and Karen Hoyt. The Loomis Robins lost to the Sugarbears 2-1 with the lone goal by Michelle Lloyd. A strong defense was led by Erica Chambers, Delise Whisler, Carly Saunders and Dominique Miller. Making shots on goal were Kathryn MacLean, Jessica Ogden, Shelby Naake, Nicole Marchal and Emma Haney. 50 Years Ago Nov. 5, 1970 Services were held for Marie N. Laurence, 76, a native of the Azore Islands and a resident of Newcastle for 47 years. She was a member of the S.P.R.S.I. Lodge of Newcastle. Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Mary Pozzi of Penryn and Mrs. Evelyn Mattos of Auburn. Services were held for Marion Ocheltree, 60, a native of South Dakota and a resident of Ophir. A retired building contractor, he was a member of Sacramento Lodge 40, F.&A.M., Sacramento Chapter No. 190, O.E.S., the Northern California Horseless Carriage Club and Reliable A's Model A Club. Mrs. Leonard Downs presented special music for the World Community Celebration of Church Women United of the Roseville and Loomis units. Mits Domen and Tom Takahashi co-chaired the 30th annual Placer County Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League's Goodwill Dinner. Any elderly people in the area who are unable to do their own yard clean-up can call Kitty Flynn, Mary Gannon or Mrs. Miller. They will organize volunteer high schoolers, 4-H members and Boy Scouts to do the jobs. Sierra College's Vocational Nursing Program was fully approved and authorized by the state of California. Successful completion of the course will lead to the license requirement to become a vocational nurse. In observance of Veterans Day, the Sacramento Signal Depot displayed an Armed Forces exhibit in the Loomis School auditorium, including airplane models. Mrs. Grant Lundgren, president of the Loomis School Parents Club, said the recent Halloween Carnival was a great success. Winners of the costume parade were Stephanie Sunada and Warren Pearl in the preschool category, along with Dixie Cheney and Bruce Dean in the first- to fourth-grade category. Dr. Jane Goodall will present an illustrated lecture at Sierra College on her unique studies of the Great Apes. In 1960, the National Geographic Society sent wildlife photographer Baron Hugo van Lawick to assist her during her studies. That led to the scientist and the photographer being married in 1964. 75 Years Ago October, 1945 Services were held for Orrin Lowell, 61, a native of Auburn and the former District Attorney for Placer County from 1922 to 1928. The body of a Sacramento man was found in Loomis in the local hobo jungle by W.C. Love, who reported the body to Justice of the Peace G.G. Doty. Lynn Basent, 18, of Oakland suffered much unpleasantness when he slipped and fell into the Rocklin City dump quarry hole. He and his friend, Leonard Lewis, were dumping garbage when a rock came loose and Lynn fell into the hole. Leonard bravely climbed down the ledge to help his friend out. Mr. and Mrs. George Bock sold their ranch near Loomis to J. Lopes, also of Loomis. The Live Auto Court, located on the highway between Rocklin and Loomis, was sold by Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Thomas to Walter and Bessie Armstrong of Oakland. Frank Vail, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.V. Vail of Loomis, returned home after spending 4 years, 8 months in the Army Air Corps. He served 19 months in North Africa and Italy. Two dogs belonging to the former Shea girls. Golda and Wanda, were poisoned and passed on into the next world where all good dogs go. The poisoner was not known and wouldn't be very popular if he were. The OPA announced that all cheaper cuts of meat would be ration free. A Rocklin man was resting quietly in the county jail after firing a gun in the Orange Cove Restaurant in Loomis, which was filled with frightened customers. After firing the shot, he stood up and raised his gun above his head while looking around and finally left the cafe. (Standing Guard-oral histories) Tsugie "Rose" and husband Hiroshi "Doc" Takemoto returned from the Amache Relocation Center in Colorado with their daughter, Jean, and son, Gordon. Before Amache, the family had been relocated from the Tule Lake camp in California and then the Rohwer and Jerome camps in Arkansas. The family was glad to get out of camp but returning home also brought hardships for them, along with many returning Japanese families who lost homes, land and personal belongings. The Takemotos were able to live with Rose's family, the Dairikis, while Rose and Doc prepared to open Main Drug Store in Loomis.
