10 Years Ago Dec. 16, 2010 The Placer County Sheriff's deputies said goodbye to one of their own. Deputy John Roye passed away at the age of 35 from colon cancer. He started in law enforcement as a Placer County jail correctional officer. After serving five years as an officer with the Auburn Police Department, he rejoined the Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Ed Bonner said, "I was very excited to welcome back a man who was born to be a peace officer." Sign painter Jim Ingram of Penryn added ornamental designs to a fire apparatus that will be in the Rose Bowl Parade. Ingram attended Stockton's College of the Pacific on a football scholarship. His teammates, Tom Flores and Dick Bass, went on to play professional football while Ingram left school to sing. From 1958 to 1962, Ingram and his Frisco 4 barbershop quartet sang in the national company of "The Music Man" touring the U.S. "I always had my sign kit with," Ingram said. After moving to Penryn in 1980 with his wife, Lorna, Ingram needed that kit as he started his sign-painting business. Former Penryn School student Karla Robinson will perform two songs during an assembly at her alma mater. Robinson is home on winter break from the University of Southern California where she is studying journalism and working to advance her singing career. Performing in the 2011 CMEA Capitol Section Junior High Honor Band are Ryland Space of H. Clarke Powers School and Kaj Jakobsen from Placer School. Also from the Loomis School District are Ben Delfavero, Katelyn Brechtel, Savannah Fahning, Ashley Isaac, Connor Cheney, Michael Buckman, Mercade Palmer, Ian Walsh, Marloe Mullins, Gabriel Nelson, McKenzie Rose Nelson, Matthew Lenz, Ciera Nelson and Kiera Padillo, all performing with the sixth-grade Honor Band. The home team earned a spot in the finals of the Del Oro Invitational Boys Basketball Tournament but lost to Oakmont 65-53 in the finals. J.T. Adrenele of Oakmont was the tourney's most valuable player and joined teammate Hunter Ford on the all-tourney squad. The Golden Eagles defeated El Dorado 71-63 and Bella Vista 52-50 to make the finals. 25 Years Ago Dec. 7, 1995 Services were held for Rev. Sam C. Cagle, 70, a native of Carbondale, Illinois and a resident of Loomis and Placer County for 45 years. He was minister of the Loomis Pentecostal Church, Lighthouse Apostolic Church of Loomis. Cagle was minister with the Pentecostal Church in Manteca from 1943 to 1947 and in Strathmore from 1948 to 1949. The Christmas in Loomis event was a success. Lupe Hernandez and Jennie Warren served Mexican food. Selling decorations were Troop 12 Boy Scouts Nick Bergmooser, Levi Brooks and Glen Martin. Little Nicole Mather was excited, or perhaps apprehensive, to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus, who sort of resembled John and Mabel Lee. A Granite Bay resident was sentenced to 2,300 days in the Placer County Jail for felony welfare fraud. Judge Joseph O'Flaherty described it as the worst case to come before him. The season of giving continues with the Loomis Basin Christmas Basket program. Volunteers will spend a Saturday morning sorting and boxing food and toys. Among the volunteers will be Boy and Girl Scouts, high school and elementary students, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 12 area churches, various service organizations and individuals. Last year, 337 families received the boxes of food, along with 87 bicycles and two or three toys for each child. Cora Cochrane, a St. Mark's Episcopal Church member in Loomis, is accepting donations. For the Turtle Island project to move ahead, the Fox Group needs approval of amendments to the Town of Loomis General Plan and rezoning of the 630-acre development. The project is located on Horseshoe Bar Road on the south side of I-80. Two "Plum Box" pen pals reunited after not hearing from or seeing each other for nearly 25 years. Judy Lynne Pugliese, now Mrs. Tom Aguilar, spent her summers on the 80-acre Wil-Mar Orchard on Barton Road in Loomis where her grandfather Nicolas Corral was the foreman. Paper "shims" were used as separators over the bottom layer of plums. In 1964, at age 11 and for the next several summers, Aguilar would often write "Pen Pal Wanted" on the shims. The result was 49 responses from a number of states, along with England, Scotland and South Wales. Dennis Burke worked at a Chicago grocery store in 1969 when he discovered one of Aguilar's shims and a correspondence began. They met this month in Chicago when Aguilar had a stopover there while traveling on Amtrak. 50 Years Ago Dec. 10, 1970 George Hirakawa reminded residents to answer their Christmas seal letters. By doing so, they can be certain their contributions will help the fight against tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases. The Neighborhood Council, with Mary Gannon in charge, sponsored a free Christmas Dinner for all senior citizens at the Loomis Women's Club House. A crowd of more than 500 turned out for the fourth annual Sierra Range Bull Sale at the Placer County Fairgrounds in Roseville. The top Angus sold for $525 and the bull, Mystic 4 of E.L., was consigned by the Leak Angus Ranch in Loomis. Darla McMaster, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim McMaster of Loomis, won a 6-month-old thoroughbred Welsh pony at a drawing during the Loomis School Parents Club's Christmas Boutique fundraiser. A second pony was won by Judy Montgomery of Loomis. Mrs. Jerry Oates was in charge of the event. George Bair of Half Diamond B Ranch was selected to membership in the American Angus Association at St. Joseph, Missouri. Marine 2nd Lt. Craig Bryson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern E. Bryson of Penryn, graduated from Officer Candidate School. Alcohol was involved in almost half of all fatal accidents and two-thirds of the fatal accidents occurring within a 25-mile radius of the driver's home. Also two-thirds of the fatal accidents occurred in rural areas and only 15 percent occurred on freeways. Loomis Judge Garrett Doty had his salary raised to $95. The salary of all the county constables was raised to $70 a month and the fees of physicians in insanity hearings were raised from $3 to $6. October 15 is the deadline for Sea-Going Santa to ship Christmas packages to servicemen overseas. Old mining towns to receive power lines from P.G.&E. include Goodyear Bar, Comptonville, Yankee Jim, Forest Hill, Butcher Ranch and Spanish Dry Diggings. Navy Day, October 27, 1945 is the day to honor the 4 million young Americans who fought in the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Two deer hunters were fined $500 each for starting the Kimshew Fire in the Lassen National Forest that burned 11,400 acres. They had built a campfire in a dangerous place during windy weather. The first meeting of the Loomis 4-H Club was held with presiding officers Kedren Castro, Juanita Willis, Caroll Castro and Phillip Oakes. Quote of the Week: "His mouth doesn't always carry out the functions of his brain." General Eisenhower's Chief of Staff regarding General George Patton. Two Auburn brothers were acquitted of an attempt to dynamite the packing shed of Sumio Doi, a Japanese American who had just returned from a relocation center. The prosecuting attorney said, "The nation desires to know whether California is going to guarantee the those returning from internment camps protection from 'terror raids.' " (Standing Guard-oral histories) Teruaki "Ted" Kitada was serving as a translator and interpreter for an American colonel with the U.S. occupational force in Japan. Ted was born in 1926 in Los Angeles and in 1940, his father moved the family to Japan. In 1941, his father registered Ted as being born in Japan. The result was the 14- year-old boy, an American citizen, was then considered a Japanese citizen. In high school during the war, his class was called to work at the Kawasaki Aircraft Factory in 1944. The students were fortunate to run out of the factory when it was demolished in a bombing. Ted was drafted into the Japanese Army in June 1945 and was armed with a toy rifle. Ted was fortunate that the war was about to end and he did not see any action. His older brother was not so lucky as he was drafted in 1943 and died as a Russian prisoner of war in Siberia.
