Granite Bay senior competes in Dustin Johnson World Junior Championships

Granite Bay senior Dylan McDermott was selected to compete in the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship from March 5-7 at TPC Myrtle Beach. The University of Colorado-bound McDermott eagled a 502-yard par-5 on the 14th hole on Day 1 to put him at 2 under par. However, two double-bogeys followed to drop him to 4-over 76 for the day. Despite a birdie on the first hole of the second day, McDermott struggled to keep par on the front nine and missed the cut after a 7-over 79. He finished with an 11-over 155. Heading into the tournament, McDermott was ranked 47th among boys junior golfers in the country and 20th among the class of 2021. Crone is Big West Scholar-Athlete Placer alum Ryman Crone was recently named a Big West Scholar-Athlete for UC Davis. Each school in the conference names one male and one female representative for the honor. Crone, who was an all-league cross country athlete all four years at Placer, was a two-time Big West all-academic choice before this season. He earned All-Big West cross country honors after an eighth-place finish, a 24-minute, 56.4-second performance in the season-ending 8K. LaVigne rakes in first collegiate weekend Colfax grad Mike LaVigne was chosen as the second baseman for d3baseball.com's Team of the Week after his first week of college baseball at Linfield University. LaVigne, who helped Colfax to back-to-back Sac-Joaquin Section championships in 2018-19, went 6-for-11 (.545) with two doubles hitting out of the two-hole in his first weekend series. He is hitting .417 and leads the team with 10 hits, four doubles, a .500 on-base percentage and a 1.083 OPS. Lewis shining at Portland State Jada Lewis put her sharpshooting aim on display during her sophomore season at Portland State. Whitney girls basketball's all-time leader in games, points, assists, field goals and 3-pointers had some big moments in the Big Sky Conference this season. Lewis had 14 points and the winning 3-pointer in the closing seconds against Northern Arizona on Feb. 11. Despite going 0-for-5 from distance, she added another go-ahead 3-pointer with 10 seconds left against Southern Utah on March 5. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 9.3 points while shooting 40.2 percent from beyond the arc, which was third-best in the Big Sky. Brown named Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year Former Woodcreek great and Arizona Wildcat sophomore Jordan Brown was named the Pac-12 Conference Sixth Man of the Year. Brown, who recorded a CIF Open Division state-championship record 35 points in 2017, averaged 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting 56 percent from the floor for Arizona. He posted a 19-point, 15-rebound double-double in his Arizona debut Nov. 27 and scored a career-high 25 points against Oregon State on Jan. 14. Brown ranked ninth in the conference in field-goal percentage and 13th in blocks. Rodrigues slings it in UC Davis opener Former Whitney quarterback Hunter Rodrigues had an impressive debut to the 2021 spring season for UC Davis. Rodrigues, who passed for 3,154 yards and 45 touchdowns during his senior season at Whitney, showed flashes of his old Wildcat days against Idaho in the Big Sky opener Saturday. The junior completed 23 of 29 passes (79.3 percent) with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. In his prior two seasons at Davis, Rodrigues had a total of 12 completions, 126 yards and one touchdown. Davis plays at Weber State on Saturday. Nichols sharp in first three Arizona starts Oakmont graduate TJ Nichols is off to a solid start as a freshman at Arizona. Entering this week, Nichols was 3-0 in his first three starts, including a six-inning, six-strikeout performance with three hits and one earned run allowed against Southeast Louisiana on Feb. 28. Nichols, who led Oakmont to a Sac-Joaquin Section championship in his junior year in 2019, has gone at least five innings in each start.
