10 Years Ago Aug. 4, 2011 The fourth annual Heritage Trail Museum Tour included a stop at the Griffith Quarry Museum in Penryn with Muriel Davis and Bruce Leonhardt on hand to conduct tours. At the Bernhard Museum in Auburn, Linda Killian of Rocklin and Judy Payne of Loomis displayed their paintings of the historic St. Mary's Church of Rocklin. Clay artist David Bradley of Loomis continually threw clay on the wheel in six 12-hour days for the last six years at the State Fair. Alexis Garcia, 10, of Loomis won the title of Junior Miss Placer County Queen during the Placer County Fair. Sean McPherson, a 1999 Del Oro High School graduate, earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California. Playing 18 games in 31 days, the Lakeside Little League's dream of bringing the third Northern California Divisions title back to Roseville ended in a 3-0 loss to Petaluma Valley. A new study found 75 percent of all U.S. high school students had used addictive substances. No community was immune, but South Placer County teenagers preferred to pop pills at nearly two times the national trend. Some mistakenly believed that abusing medication wasn't as bad as taking other illicit drugs, because the pills were prescribed by a doctor. The requirement to be on the Del Oro High School Cheer team is community service. The 2011 team plans to raise $5,000 to be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Melissa Maneatis earned third-place in the pole vault at the Junior Olympics Track Championships. The soon-to-be Del Oro freshman cleared 10 feet, 6 inches in the 13- to-14-year-old age group. Animals taken from a Loomis residence by the Humane Society included 37 goats, 19 sheep, 14 dogs, and five 700-pound pigs. Brian Bousman, 42, of Rocklin recently reached professional status as a bodybuilder. After taking a break from the sport for nearly two decades, Bousman is back in bodybuilding competition. Young people were asked, "What are your plans for the rest of the summer?" Sophia Campagna, Rocklin - "Do more swimming." Electra Kamphefner, Granite Bay - "Catch up with friends." Cassidy Marquez, Loomis - "Going to Catalina to go camping." 25 Years Ago Aug. 1, 1996 Ed Horton, a native and lifelong resident of Loomis, will not seek a sixth term on the Placer County Water Agency Board of Directors. "There comes a time in one's life when it's time to move on and do other things. The agency is in good shape," he said. The Loomis Fire Protection District chief for 13 years, Horton has a long and impressive involvement in community service. Navy Fireman Daniel Standley, son of Jerry Standley of Loomis, participated in the six-nation maritime exercise, "Rim of the Pacific," aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence. Marine Pfc. Kelley Chamberlain, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Chamberlain of Rocklin, graduated from Basic Cryptologic Technician School in Pensacola, Florida. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Sean Josephson, a 1988 Del Oro High School graduate, is serving aboard the guided missile frigate USS Klakring. The ship is part of the 10-ship USS Enterprise Battle Group. Marine Pvt. Terrell Roderick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Galen Crum of Loomis, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. Erin Osello, daughter of Doug and Hilve Osello of Loomis, was named to the Dean's List at North Park College of Chicago, Illinois. Mike and Kyna Frost of Loomis garnered "Best of Show" at the 30th annual home wine competition at the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa. The award-winner was a 1995 Symphony, a white wine. Rachael Waller of Loomis was awarded a merit scholarship award at Grinell College of Iowa. Sierra College students receiving nursing scholarships from veterans groups are Karen Sonnenburg of Rocklin and Elizabeth Jacoshenk of Loomis. Jose Reyes is the new head wrestling coach at Sierra College. In 1984, he was the California Junior College champion at 167 pounds. Reyes will be assisted by Phil Scott and Jeff Hobart. John Nitta of High Ranch Nursery in Loomis coordinated the project to complete the ballfield at Penryn School. Nitta's father, Al Nitta, hydroseeded the new lawn. 50 Years Ago Aug. 5, 1971 Services were conducted for Rikio Yamada, 58, a native of Penryn. He had been employed at Aero Jet and was a Placer Buddhist Church member. Services were held for Nelle Kister, 81, an Osage, Iowa native and a Newcastle area resident for the past 77 years. Kister was a charter member of the Auburn Garden Club, the Long Valley Grange and a member of the Placer County Republican Women's Club. She was the widow of the late Joseph Kister, a pioneer fruit rancher who owned the landmark ranch of Kister's Corners on Auburn Folsom Road. George Hirakawa of Penryn was honored by the New York Life Insurance Company as an outstanding agent. Jennie DuBosa Antique Shop opened on Ward Lane in Rocklin. A National 4-H home improvement program was sponsored by the S&H Foundation and supervised by the Cooperative Extension Service. 4-H members in the program planned and carried out projects, such as hanging wallpaper, recovering chairs and refinishing furniture. The Apollo tracking ship, USNS Vanguard, supports all Apollo flights as the spacecrafts enter the Earth's orbit. The ship has compact complexes of electronic equipment on board. A very lovely painting shows three Roseville Scouts enacting the historical flag-raising at Iwo Jima. The painting done many years ago by Mrs. Henry Gaasch of Roseville had been hanging in the Tahoe Area Scout office. 75 Years Ago April 1946 Services were held for John H. Swetzer, one of the pioneer citizens and fruit growers of the Loomis District. He was born in Red Wing, Minnesota in 1875 and lived in South Dakota before his family moved to California. They spent the first few weeks in the Mehl Hotel in Marysville, then owned by the father of the Mehl brothers from Loomis. The Swetzer family then settled in Loomis where John and his brothers planted some of the earliest orchards in the district. In 1904, John married Eva Boals of Dakota City, Nebraska. Enjoying baseball, John played catcher for the Loomis town team. Hubert Reeves, recently returned from the Army in Europe, was the guest speaker for the Public Schools Week Program. He emphasized the teaching of falsehoods instead of truths as a factor in the conditions leading up to the war in Europe. Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Arehart purchased the 11-acre Sugar Loaf Hill estate in Loomis of the late Judge Pollen. The Dairymen's Field Day at Peter Hawkins Ranch in Ophir included a discussion on mastitis. Alfred Pilliard of Loomis, who is running for sheriff, has been a Placer County resident for 40 years and served as constable of Township No. 9. He also served as deputy sheriff under the late Elmer Gum. Farm families with extra eggs can store them for eight to nine months. Purchase a pint of water glass at the drug store and add nine or ten parts of boiled water to the water glass. Pouring the water glass solution over about 200 eggs in a five-gallon crock completes the process. Kenneth Gordon, 24, of Penryn was hurt as a car he was riding in sideswiped a machine belonging to E.R. Navarez of Lincoln. The driver of the car was cited for driving on the wrong side of the road. Local youngsters missing school include Kathleen Osborn as a pitchfork went through her finger, Patsy Adge with measles, and Frank Foster who was picking up poison oak sticks in his pasture. Honored during a tea at the Woman's Club House in Loomis were ladies who served over 500 hours as Red Cross volunteers during the war. They are Grace Fieser, Lorena Laird, Ethel Law, Mary Day, Lulu Rippey, Mary Williams and Sadie Callison.
