David Francis Dashiell 7/15/1940 - 8/7/2021

Dave passed away at age 81 at his home in Auburn, CA.He was born in Sacramento to Margaret and William Dashiell. Dave was a descendant of the pioneering Baxter Family and grew up in the mountain town of Baxter, CA. He attended elementary school in Alta and graduated from Placer High School in 1959.Dave worked hard his entire life. He owned and operated Dashiell Plumbing for many years, plumbing houses all around Northern California. In the late 1970s, when his parents retired, he and his wife Cheryl took over the operation of the Baxter businesses: the General Store, Chevron Station, and Hof Brau. Dave added to the business complex when he built Baxter RV Campground, which was a beloved mountain retreat for campers for many years. In the 1980s, Dave developed natural springs on the family property and founded the Baxter Springs Water Bulk Facility, which sold spring water to bottling companies. Dave retired from the spring water business in 2016, and he was proud that the business remains family operated.When Dave wasn't working, he kept busy with many hobbies and projects. He loved fishing and regularly organized trips to Alaskan fishing lodges with his closest friends and family. He was an expert trap shooter and a regular at the Auburn Trap Club. He was always working with his hands, and made everything from fishing weights to shotgun shells. He also loved food—both growing it and cooking it. He was famous for his beautiful mandarin oranges and delicious smoked chicken and ribs. He was a very social guy and enjoyed having early morning coffee with his "cronies," shooting the breeze, and playing dominoes. In recent years, he took up pinochle and looked forward to his regular pinochle game with a group from Castle City Mobile Home Park. Dave was always looking for a good deal, and he didn't think twice about driving across the state to get a bargain—whether it be for an old forklift or a barrel of walnuts.Dave will be remembered for his incredible generosity. His friends say they could never catch up with him in the favor department. He lived a big life and will be greatly missed by the scores of people whose lives he touched over the years. Dave is survived by his wife Cheryl; 5 children: Marsha Dashiell, Gary (Andrea) Dashiell, Carrie (Chris) Brewster, Billy (Laura) Dashiell, Samantha (Andrew) Freeman; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; and his brother, Stephen.A gathering of friends and family in memory of Dave will be held at a later date.
