10 Years Ago Sept. 15, 2011 Services were held for Joseph Desiderio Carlos, 85, a Colton, California native. He retired from Sacramento County Department of Parks and Recreation. Carlos volunteered for the Sacramento Jazz Festival and was a member of the men's group at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Rocklin. Services were conducted for Robert Eugene Reyes, 84, a Carnegie, Oklahoma native. A U.S. Navy veteran, Reyes worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 41 years. He then started his own business, Roger's Refrigeration in Loomis, for 25 years. Penryn Oaks Stables was the site for a fundraiser, "A Heart for Jani," to support heart transplant candidate, Taylor Pallavicini. "At first, it was very hard to come to terms with the idea of a donor. But the turning point for me was God's plan," Pallavicini said. The Loomis Union School District continues to rank high in the state Academic Performance Index (API) score. Andy Withers, Penryn School principal said, "It is both rewarding and exciting to see that the hard work and energy of our staff and students resulted in an increased API score." Volunteers Dan Hansen of Rocklin, Dale Head of Grass Valley, Will Mullins of Penryn, and Jen Kingston of Newcastle helped build the new stage at the Blue Anchor Park in Loomis. The Placer County Deputy Sheriff's Association announced its 2011 scholarships for outstanding students. The Deputy James Machado Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Caitlyn Bettencourt, daughter of Deputy Laurie Bettencourt. Caitlyn's brother, Russell Bettencourt, also received a scholarship. The Loomis Freedom U13 girls soccer team earned first-place in the Tiburon Mill Valley tournament. Team players were Brooke Bergthold, Paige Martinsen, Cassidy Marquez, Madison Tippet, Becca Maringer, Hannah Thilmony, Savanna Shell, Tatiana Conto, Jackie Smaldone, Aiden Marquez, Madalyn Aust, Kylee Crise and Megan Conkle. 25 Years Ago Sept. 12, 1996 Services were held for JoAnn Ellingford, 59, a Montana native and a Loomis resident. More than 10,000 chicken halves will be barbecued with the special trademark teriyaki sauce during the 32nd annual Food Bazaar at the Placer Buddhist Church in Penryn. The Loomis U-6 Fireflies soccer team beat the Lil Rockets with goals by Kevin Yanez, Patrick Barieau and Matt Leak. Roving photographer Paul Yokote visited the Loomis Grange food booth at the Gold Country Fair in Auburn. The Grange has maintained a booth at the fair for more than 50 years. Yokote has been taking photos for the newspaper of local kids showing their animals at the fair. Del Oro High School junior Erin Meredith and her horse, Regal, were the big winners in the seventh annual Medal Challenge during the Sacramento Hunter/Jumper Association horse show. Harry Friend and Elsie Doring Friend observed their golden wedding anniversary. Harry is originally from Grass Valley and Elsie from Loomis. They were married at the First Baptist Church in Roseville. At the time, Harry was attached to the Fairfield-Suisun Army Air Base. Harry's family lived in Lincoln and Elsie's in Loomis. Robin Gray represented Mareta Lane in Loomis and the neighborhood earned the "National Night Out" award. Andrew Patton and Brian Peart are modeling Loomis Eggplant Festival T-shirts in preparation for the event. More than 700 pounds of locally-grown eggplant from Mary Rosenzweig and Jan Thompson will be available during the festival. Green Tree Studio dancers will provide entertainment. Dance group members include Tarah Johnson, Fre Stout, Kelly Ann Jipson, Lora Butra, Katrin Leupp, Katie Speck, Wynnter Rose, Amanda Harms and Aubree Rose. 50 Years Ago Sept. 23, 1971 Services were conducted for Kevin J. Tokutomi, 18, who died as a result of head injuries sustained in an auto accident. An Auburn native, he was a lifelong resident of Newcastle. A recent Del Oro High School graduate, Tokutomi was a member of the Placer Junior Japanese Americans Citizens League (JACL) and the YBA of the Placer Buddhist Church of Penryn. Several other teens were injured in the accident but none were life-threatening. Services were held for very young Laurie Ann Nishimoto, age 7 months, 15 days. She died following heart surgery at the University of California hospital. Survivors are her parents, Robert and Janice Nishimoto of Carmichael; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Nishimoto of Auburn; Mr. and Mrs. James Uyeda of Rocklin; and brother, Russell Nishimoto of Carmichael. St. Albans Country Day School in Roseville announced two new teachers, Mrs. Dorine Sagner in third-grade and Mrs. Joanne Brace, music teacher. More than 1,800 members in 49 Lions Clubs in six area counties participated in the annual White Cane drives to support sight-saving programs. Kay Miyamura, assisted by Albert Yoshikawa and Herb Tokutomi, are in charge of the Chicken Teriyaki Festival at the Placer Buddhist Church in Penryn. The U.S. Agency for International Development assists in giving loans to Vietnamese farmers borrowing money for seed and fertilizer. High yield rice makes small farmers a good credit risk. Del Oro High School has a new high in enrollment of 1,014 students, according to Principal Rod Hamilton. Finding room in the classrooms is a major hurdle as more than 100 classes were closed with maximum numbers. Attending Sierra College on the Advanced Placement program are 14 upper graders, including Frank Piperato, who will complete a half year of college work by the time he graduates from Del Oro. 75 Years Ago May 1946 Mr. Lawrence Hall of the American Red Cross was guest speaker at a Federated Women's Club meeting. He spoke of the conditions at the Santa Tomas Prisoner of War (POW) camp in the Philippines during the war. The Red Cross was allowed to provide supplies that the prisoners were denied for three years. Also,18,000 letters from home were delivered and each prisoner was given stationery and an airmail-stamped envelope to write back. "Little Giant" with Bud Abbott and Lou Costello is showing at the State Theater in Auburn. There is not enough food to feed the world. War laid its bloody hand on almost all the earth. Many farmers died from battle, barns burned, livestock killed and the railroads ruined. Bread in the United States is cut in size from one pound to 14 1/2 ounces but the price remains the same. The purpose is to help save bread to send more across the sea to feed our starving neighbors. Jack "Bill" Stephens operates the Union Station on Highway 40 at Penryn Hill. Mr. Richard Eastman of Roseville on the piano provided entertainment for the May Day Breakfast given by the Ladies Aid of Loomis. Bank of America employees received a boost in pay. "Pete" Badovinac of Roseville is a candidate for Placer County Sheriff. He is engaged as a boilermaker at the Southern Pacific shops. The supply of foreign labor needed for thinning fruit trees, locally and beyond, has dropped. That means more housing will be required for domestic workers. The bulk of the foreign workers had housing not suitable for American workers. The Roseville Livestock Auction Yards, another of the postwar industries in the city, opened near the Southern Pacific stock corrals at the end of Church Street. The yards will be managed by Joseph Sorenson and Lester Call.
