Linebacker Josh Tremain leads Folsom defense

Folsom High's football program is widely known for its strong quarterback play and the ability to score a lot of points. But when asked before the season started who the team's best player is, Folsom coach Paul Doherty said it may be senior linebacker Josh Tremain. Though receiver Rico Flores Jr. and tight end Walker Lyons are big time recruits, Tremain does not yet have an offer. That tells you how highly Doherty thinks of the team leader on defense. Through three games, Tremain leads the Bulldogs with 32 tackles, including 12 solo tackles and two for a loss. He's got 1 ½ sacks, one pass defended and one caused fumble. The 6-2, 215-pound linebacker is the heart and soul of the defense. "We run a lot of things through him," Folsom defensive coordinator Val Laolagi said. "He has to recognize before everyone else the matchup and what he sees. He's like another coach on the field. "Josh is so good at coming down hard on a running back or quarterback. His skill and football IQ are huge assets for him. Another is that he can really put a lick on somebody. He doesn't miss. He's a sure tackler." Yet with all that said, Tremain has yet to receive a scholarship offer. "We've had guys in the past like my son, Bailey, Josiah Deguara and Sam Whitney that didn't have early offers and you see where they ended up at," Laolagi said. (Bailey went to UNLV; Deguara went to Cincinnati, while Whitney attended Boise State). Josh's job right now is to go out and look good on film and he's doing that. I believe the offers will come." Folsom Telegraph: What are your plans/hopes for after high school? Josh Tremain: After high school, I hope to go play college football. FT: Do sports run in your family? JT: Yes, I have a twin brother, Tyler, who is the quarterback and a cousin, Jake, who is the kicker. FT: How long have you been playing football and how did you get your start in it? JT: I have been playing football since I was 7. My dad was coaching high school football so that started my interest in the sport. FT: Have you always been a linebacker? What do you like about playing that position? JT: I have always played linebacker. I like being the captain of the defense and being able to play sideline to sideline. FT: Coach Doherty has said you might be the best player on the team. What do you feel your strengths are as a player? JT: I think some of my strengths are being able to play sideline to sideline, and that I'm a very aggressive player. FT: The team is off to a 2-0 start and has looked very good. From the defensive side of the ball, how do you assess how the team has played? JT: I think the team has been playing great. As a defense, we have been causing a lot of turnovers and getting the offense the ball back. The offense has been very effective in scoring this year. FT: You've faced two opponents that run the veer and have done very well against them. You've got another opponent coming to Folsom in a few weeks that runs the same offense. How is the confidence level of the defense, as the game with De La Salle gets closer? JT: Our defense has been playing good against the run. For De La Salle, we need to clean some things up to get ready for them. FT: What makes Folsom's defense so good? What do you feel you guys do well on the field? JT: Our defense has each other's back; if one person makes a mistake, someone else is there. We work very well together and have been playing together for many years. FT: Have you received any scholarship offers or any interest from colleges? JT: I have no scholarship offers. FT: Is playing football in college a goal for you? JT: Yes, playing football in college is a big goal for me. FT: Have you ever been involved in any other sports? JT: I also play baseball. FT: What is your favorite class/subject in school? JT: My favorite subject is government. FT: Favorite music and/or artist? JT: My favorite music is country music. FT: Favorite book or movie? JT: My favorite movie is Remember the Titans. FT: Favorite Food? JT: My favorite food is steak. FT: Do you have any pets? Tell us about them. JT: I have a 4-year-old dog. FT: Do you have any hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time? JT: In my free time, I like to snowboard and wakeboard. FT: What inspires you in sports? JT: Coach Doherty inspires me. FT: Is there a particular job or profession you'd like to have someday? JT: I don't have a particular job I want when I'm older.
