Donald J. Novey

Donald J. Novey, Great Grandson of Sacramento pioneer Cornelius Westervelt passed away on June 18th 2021. His wife of 67 years, Betty J. (Thornton) had previously passed. Don is survived by his daughters Patty, Cathy and son Donald L. Novey. Daughter Carol, passed prior. In addition his life carries on through nine Grandchildren: Shanyn McMullin, Paul Brommerich, Brandy Sommer, Bryon Brommerich, Donald P. Novey, Jill Lyon, Damen Brommerich, Candace Belingheri, and Crystal Karabinus. In addition, Don & Betty's legacy continues through 20 Great Grandchildren. Sister-in-law Eleanor Cleghorn and daughter-in-law Carol Novey along with son-in-laws: Dennis Callnon, Gary Brommerich, and Tim Schaaf.Don started his working career in 1944 as the clubhouse boy for the Sacramento Solons attending to PCL greats as Casey Stengel of the Oakland Oaks and Ad Liska of the Portland Beavers. While at the park he met Betty while she was the Cracker Jack girl. Upon graduating from Sacramento High School in 1947 he signed on with the United States Army. After basic training at Fort Ord, Don was sent to the famed 325 Regiment of the 82nd Airborne. Subsequently, he served in such exotic places like Fliegerhorst in Europe, Wie Jam Bo in Korea, and Ben Hoa in Vietnam. Don Novey retired as a Sergeant Major with the 8th Infantry Division in 1968.Don and Betty enjoyed their new retirement in Placer County on their small farm including their Persimmon orchard. Don Eventually signed onto the Department of Corrections and Betty volunteered with the American Red Cross . Don retired from the Corrections system in the 1980's. Betty and Don enjoyed their grandchildren for the rest of their lives in Placer County.Don's internment will be held at the Newcastle Cemetery District on 17 September 2021, at 11 am (850 Taylor Rd.). Celebration of life will follow with family and friends in Loomis, at the Blue Goose (3550 Taylor Rd).
