Zebras remain dominant cruising to sixth straight win

The Lincoln High Zebras girls' volleyball team came away with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-22 win against Oakmont on Tuesday, marking their sixth win in a row in Foothill Valley League play. "We let off the gas after the first five points in set one, but we still served tough and were able to get the job done," coach Jeff Deter said. Traditionally this season, Lincoln has had a commanding attack as it averages 13 kills per set. On Tuesday, the Zebras won in a different fashion serving the ball well as junior Jordyn Deter and senior Morgan Colyer combined for 12 aces in the contest. "This season, we're working a lot on being versatile, getting our middles and right sides involved and working on all the small parts of the game," Colyer said. The Zebras started with five straight points in the first set, including three aces by Deter, but the Vikings responded and tied the score 6-6 following plays by junior Taylor Schell and senior Ella Pock. Lincoln went on a 19-9 run to win the first set, including five kills by Colyer. In the second set, it was all Lincoln beginning 11-3 and never looking back. The Lady Zebras went up 20-10 in the third set but faltered having issues with transitioning and positioning, allowing Oakmont the opportunity to come back. That door was shut when Zebras outside hitter Kendal Widell got the final kill to seal the match. "I think we need to be more prepared on defense because we're able to get those balls but need to be ready before they contact the ball and then we will be fine," Jordyn Deter said. Lincoln leads the Foothill Valley League over Ponderosa, who are 4-1, and its next match will be tonight at home against Placer. The Zebras' 14-2 start matches their record to this point from 2019. Twelve Bridges High School The Raging Rhinos have won each of their last five matches, only dropping one of the 11 sets they've played. They are currently leading the Pioneer Valley League with a 4-0 record. "Our success stems from the experience our players had coming into the season with many of them playing club in the off season," assistant coach Amanda Retallack said. "All of our girls are team players and positive teammates as well, which makes it easier to coach." Twelve Bridges' attack has been led by sophomores Ashley Berry and Kate Emerzian, who have combined for 22 kills while Samantha Salva is leading the way with 29 serving aces. Emerzian has also been a big help defensively with 32 digs on the season. The Rhinos' next match is this afternoon at home against Foothill and they will travel to take on Colfax next Wednesday.
