Big Time-Pow Wow headed to Gold Country Fairgrounds

In an effort to honor the traditions of their ancestors, the Sierra Native Alliance is bringing the 14th annual Auburn Big Time-Pow Wow to the Gold Country Fairgrounds October 17. The day-long celebration of Indigenous music and dance honors diverse Native American cultures and traditions. The event features Native American dancers, drummers, singers and artists from the region. The event hosts a market of Native artists, crafts, cultural demonstration and food booths. Kicking off the celebration will be California Native Dancing at 10 a.m.. The Gourd Dance will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the Grand Entry at noon. Hawaiian dancers will perform at 5 p.m. and Intertribal Dancing will continue until 9 p.m. The Auburn Big Time-Pow Wow attracts people from diverse indigenous nations to gather for the purpose of honoring the traditions of their ancestors. This event inspires cultural pride and provides an opportunity for tribal families to come together to celebrate significant life events; exchange arts and crafts; and to sing, dance, and teach tribal customs. The event is sponsored by Sierra Native Alliance with the support of Placer Campaign for Community Wellness. This family friendly event is free and open to the public with free parking at the fairgrounds. Spectators are encouraged to bring chairs and cash for food. Sierra Native Alliance is a Native family resource agency that provides education, advocacy and counseling services for youth and families. Located in Auburn, the Sierra Native Alliance Family Wellness programs are supported by the Placer Campaign for Community Wellness and First 5 Placer towards the goal of improving the health and wellbeing of families in Placer County.
