Mildred "Margaret" Smith 7/27/1939 - 10/18/2021

Mildred "Margaret" Cornelia Smith, 82, of Folsom, died Oct. 18, 2021 at Mercy Hospital of Folsom. Beloved daughter of Cornelia Venter Smith and Charles Pennypacker Smith, Sr., she was born July 27, 1939 in Berkeley, Calif. Known later in life as Margaret, she had many nicknames, including Margie and her favorite, Foxtail, as she was affectionately called by her father. She lived with her family in Palo Alto, Calif., and graduated from Palo Alto High School. She graduated from the Rowland Hall School for Girls in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1958. Margaret was a lifelong student, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Utah at Salt Lake City. She continued her higher education at numerous colleges and universities, including Montana State University, Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., and Pennsylvania State University. She later lived in Calgary, Alberta with her parents, and attended the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1964. Margaret later returned to California to be closer to her family, and lived in Burlingame and Sacramento. In her final years, she moved to Folsom, where she received loving care. Margaret was an avid reader of science and history. She enjoyed sketching landscapes and people. She collected mementos of her life experiences and was a dedicated scrapbooker. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Charles Pennypacker Smith, Jr., Spokane, Wash. She is survived by her nephew, Erik Smith, Olympia, Wash., niece Jennifer McCormack, Chelan, Wash., and sister-in-law Judy Smith, Spokane, and by numerous relatives in her extended family.
