Eagles' soccer team perched on top of Sierra Valley Conference

Vista del Lago's varsity soccer team has made it known they are the team to beat in the Sierra Valley Conference. The Eagles followed up as 4-3 win over Oak Ridge on Oct. 5 with a 1-0 victory over Cordova on Oct. 7, which has the team sitting on top of the league with a 6-1 record. "We're in a good spot," Vista coach Jimmy Frazelle said after the win over Cordova. "Now that we're on top, we've got to fight to stay there. We've still got work to do, not by any means is the league season over." The Eagles scored the game's only goal about 10 minutes into the second half when Dustin Lamy crossed the ball in the box to Marwan Nazanda, who one-touched it into the far corner of the net. Vista keeper Brian Werner kept his team in front, making several point-blank saves in the second half from a desperate Cordova offense. Connor Galvin also cleared a ball in the box late in the game after Werner made the initial save but couldn't control the ball. Cody Dow played well throughout the game, offensively in the first half and for a good portion of the second, before Frazelle moved him back to defense to protect the lead. "Brian saved some goals for us, and Cody, this was his first real game back from a hip-flexor injury," Frazelle said. "He's the fastest player on the team and he made some good stuff happen for us." Monday's soccer game at Vista del Lago won't be forgotten anytime soon. The Eagles topped Oak Ridge 4-3 to bring the game to an end, which almost was called earlier because of a fight. Vista led 3-2 in the second half when the fight began. With the ball and against Oak Ridge's last defender, Vista's Robbie Agar met goalkeeper Teddy Soloski in the goalie box. What could be seen from the sidelines was defender Case Donahue holding Agar in a position as Soloski began punching him. Frazelle found himself with a yellow card for coming on the field along with Agar and Soloski taking reds. "It's one thing when two guys are getting into it because it's a heated game," said Frazelle. "But a guy coming in from behind and swinging on someone is totally outrageous. The only reason I ran out there was because I didn't want Robbie getting jumped." Fortunately, the event was a side note to the real athletics that took place. Trailing 2-0, the Eagles scored three unanswered goals from Nazanda, MJ Fuller and Sean Norton. Oak Ridge answered with a tying goal before Dow scored the game winner following up a shot by Nazanda. Vista's next game is at home Monday against Christian Brothers before traveling to Ponderosa on Wednesday.
