El Dorado Hills' Teagan Brown is one of best in school history

Steve White has been coaching varsity girls' basketball at Oak Ridge for about 25 years and Teagan Brown is the best player he's coached. There isn't anything the senior guard can't do on the court, perhaps other than guarding a big post player, but then again she hasn't been asked to do that either so maybe she could. When asked what she does best, White responded, "everything." "I've never had a player who leads the team in every major statistical category," White said. "Scoring, rebounding, assists; she guards the other team's best player, she plays 98 percent of the game if necessary and does so at a high level. She moves well without the ball on offense and makes good cuts. She's the most complete player I've coached." Brown is averaging 19 points per game this season and for her career, she's scored 1,676 points in 94 games for an average of 17.8 points per game. She's also an extremely good rebounder, averaging 8.7 rebounds a game this season. Last year, Brown averaged 10.3 rebounds per game. Anyone who has followed the Oak Ridge program remembers the team's star player back in 2009-2010, Sara James, who was another do-everything player who led the Trojans to a Division I state championship. James was a scoring dynamo, who also rebounded and defended and did a lot of the same things Brown currently does. She finished her career with 2,490 points for an average of 18.4 points per game. "The only thing that separates them is that Teagan is probably the better defender," White said. "Also, we played in a different league back when Sara was here and the competition wasn't quite as tough as it is now. The Sierra Foothill League is the toughest league we've ever played in. Sara also played in 135 games and Teagan has only played in 94, missing 20-plus game because of COVID." Folsom Telegraph: It seems like yesterday you were a freshman. Have your high school years gone quickly to you or no? Teagan Brown: High school has gone by so quickly. It seems like just yesterday I was a freshman playing on the Oak Ridge court. Especially with COVID, it seems like one year of high school didn't even happen. FT: How do you feel your game has developed since your freshman year? What have you worked on to improve the most? How are you a better player today? TB: As a freshman, all I had going for me was my quickness to the basket. Since then I slowly developed my ball handling and shot from the outside. With those combined, it has made me a much better player today. FT: You've accepted a full-scholarship offer from the University of Washington. How excited are you about that and your future there? Why did you choose to go there? TB: I am so excited for my future at Washington. The coaching staff is amazing and the best part is they still show consistent love even after the whole recruiting process. They have the major I want to go into, which is environment science, and all around is just a beautiful campus. FT: How would you say this season is going for the team? TB: This season our team has really grown through every game we have played. I am excited to see how far we can take our growth into the section and Nor-Cal playoffs. FT: What are the strengths of your team? Why are you tough to beat? TB: Our strength comes from our defense. Our energy on defense will lead to our energy on offense so we emphasize on being locked in on the defensive side. FT: Any goals for the remainder of the season? TB: Our goal for the remainder of the season is to obviously win league and then win sections and then win states. We want to go all the way. FT: What are you most proud of about your playing career at Oak Ridge? TB: I'm most proud of being able to be a huge factor in the success Oak Ridge has had over the four years and the culture that was and is still being created there. NPH. FT: Do you have a most memorable moment? Whether it's a shot, a game or a memory with teammates etc? TB: My most memorable moment is going all the way to sections my sophomore year with an amazing team. Although we didn't get the W, it was very memorable to get to play in the Kings' stadium.
