10 Years Ago May 3, 2012 "The Loomis Basin Has Talent" contest has eight semi-finalists. They are Reilly Gallagher, 13, a Placer School student; Zach Taylor, 19, who works for a Loomis tree-trimming business; Steven Goutheir, 31, a classical French chef; Jessica Arriago, 30, a working single mom; Jeanette Hawkins, a songwriter; Paul Doerner, 33, a banjo player; Johnny Bilson, 35, who grew up in Rocklin; and Addie Grove, a jewelry salesperson. H. Clarke Powers Elementary School in Loomis was honored as a 2012 California Distinguished School, the highest level of recognition for public schools. Parent Amy Peterson said, "The teachers here are absolutely wonderful. I credit Principal Lockwood with creating such a wonderful learning environment." Dave Albright expects a large turnout for the third annual Soap Box Derby event in Loomis. A change in race rules involves using a steering wheel rather than foot-steering, which were easier to build. Those young people without a car could get one from a pool of rental cars. Among the participants are Lauren and Sydney Mathias, and Talia Little. Del Oro High sophomore Katie Conkel organized a team of eight of her peers, along with her mother, Marty Conkel, to participate in the Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. In a match to decide the Sierra Foothill League tennis title, Granite Bay defeated Del Oro 5-4 to end tied for the league's flag. Del Oro's Brett Bacharach won his third league singles' championship by defeating Roseville's Dallas Guerrero in the semi-finals and Zach Low of Granite Bay in the finals. Loomis School Principal Rick Judd returned from medical leave after undergoing treatment for throat cancer. The seventh-grade girls' volleyball team presented him with a tree of courage for inspiring them during their season. Local residents were asked, "What do you do to stay green at home?" Laurie Schumacher - "I just recycled a wood shelf into a garden box." Mark Uebner - "I make a vermiculture with banana peels, newspaper and worms." Sandra Freeland - "We use all the tree trimmings to heat our house." 25 Years Ago May 1, 1997 Funeral services were held for Aubrey Willis, 77, an Ada, Oklahoma native and a Placer County resident since 1961. A World War I veteran, he was a John Birch Society member. Willis was a repairman for several propane businesses. Rhonda Morillas, representing Soroptimist International of Rocklin-Loomis, presented a check to Doug Cook of Paul's Place Association. The money will help defray the cost for remodeling of Paul's Place, the home of the late Paul Yokote. Madeline Freeman, formerly of Penryn, earned "Best of Category" in mixed media at the 27th annual Membership Show at the Roseville Arts Center. Loomis Troop 12 Boy Scouts Galen Ferrel, Scott Rae and Chris Obranovich, along with Tom Ferrel, are training in preparation for a 50-mile trip down the Sacramento River later in the season. Andrea Sherman hit two triples, Lisa Sherman one triple, and pitcher Jessica Logsdon hit a home run for the Del Oro Varsity Softball team in a 5-0 win over Mesa Verde. The team season record was 25-0. Players sold candy to help fund the South Placer Little League. The Diamondbacks team sold a total of 61 boxes of candy with one player, Kit Ryan, selling 20 of those. Bob and Barbara Bowler enjoyed their pasta dinner at St. Mark's Anglican Episcopal Church in Loomis. Serving the couple were young Natalie Graham and Lindsay Mason. Awarded $500 Student Equity/Student Success scholarships were Ki Han of Roseville, Scott Kinoshitaof of Orangevale and Carolyn Stephenson of Loomis. Tim Murray of Granite Bay won the saddle bronc event and Travis Kevie of Newcastle the bareback riding event at the 7th District Three California High School Rodeo. The event took place at the Lincoln arena. The town of Loomis is taking McDonald's to court. It is a lawsuit over an 85-foot-high sign along I-80 east of Sierra College Boulevard. The sign is located within the city of Rocklin but directly behind Hunter's Crossing subdivision within the town limits of Loomis. The sign advertised a combination of McDonald's restaurant and Chevron gas station, tagged by some as "McChevron." 50 Years Ago May 11, 1972 The Rotary Club of Sunset's 1972 Community Service Awards went to Howard Scribner and Mrs. Margarita (Frank) Nevarez for their personal service to their communities. Scribner was honored for founding the annual Rocklin Jubilee, the Rocklin Chamber of Commerce and the Rocklin Chamber Maids. Nevarez was cited for her participation in the Loomis Well-Baby Clinic, various blood banks, the Del Oro High School Carnival and other civic events. Terry Lynn Tudsbury, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Tudsbury of Loomis, is attending Sierra College. She is a 1969 Del Oro High School graduate. Also attending Sierra College is Cindy Hughes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Hughes of Rocklin. She graduated from Oakmont High School in 1970 and is employed at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. Jim Johnson and Bob Rhea are co-chairmen for the fifth annual Loomis Basin Golf Festival to be held at the Indian Creek Country Club. Chefs Robby Roberts and Bob Holihan will serve a chicken barbecue. The event is sponsored by the Del Oro Parents Club. Campaign headquarters for presidential candidate George McGovern opened on Vernon Street in Roseville. A raffle was held with prizes including a portable TV, a $20 gift certificate to Tower Records and a case of beer. Mrs. Lola Bowers of Roseville will install officers for the Woman's Club of Loomis. Contracts were awarded to R.C. Collett and G.S. Herrington, Inc. for work being done in connection with the Auburn Dam. Bonnie Lott chaired Twirp Week at Del Oro High School with many fun events planned. The Sierra College chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, the nation's largest service fraternity, held its annual UMOC (Ugly Man On Campus) Beauty and Beast contest. A Phi O sponsors hoped to raise $1,000 for the School Partnership Program, which Sierra students hope to build in one of the Peace Corps countries such as Peru, Brazil, Kenya or Korea. 75 Years Ago November 1946 Otis Brown, 37, was critically injured when he was hit by a car on the highway between the Wayside Inn and the Orange Cove Restaurant in Loomis. Three persons were injured and one was killed near the same location, the spot where the Lincoln Road joins the highway. The Ship's Bell Restaurant in Loomis is ready to open again under new management of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Figenshu, along with Mr. and Mrs. Howard Biddle, both couples from Philadelphia. Roseville citizens are protesting the new parking slot machines on the grounds that they are on the highway and not legal. However, a test with a penny revealed that the machines are ready for action. While John Montero, a local resident, was serving in action during the war, he trained a dog. He was reunited with his partner as the large police dog was shipped from France to Sacramento. The Men's Club of Loomis might reorganize as part of the Lions Club. Hazel Woodward invites the public to the Loomis Grange Bazaar. Booths will include a live fish pond for youngsters to try their luck and fortune-telling to learn your past and future. A gang of high school boys in Auburn was arrested after a series of car thefts. The investigation was carried on by Police Chief Fred Adge and Probation Officer Charles Allen. For Sale: 580-acre cattle ranch with 50 head of good cattle located 3 miles east of Loomis - $25,000. Al Briscoe accepted employment in the railroad shops in Roseville. Kids can enjoy their favorite cartoons, 17 in all, on Saturday morning at the State Theater in Auburn for 30 cents. Students in Miss Adams' room at Loomis School are filling a Jr. Red Cross box to make some little war orphan happy at Christmas. Yoshinobu and Joyce brought crayons and Setsuko added 2 pencils to the box. At Thanksgiving, we should quietly contemplate the fact that during the war, our families were never subject to sudden death from the sky and our homes were not demolished.
