10 Years Ago May 10, 2012 Max King, 80, passed away. A graduate of Gainsville High School in Missouri, he served in the U.S. Navy. King retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1987 after many years of service. Doug Horton of Horton Iris Garden exhibited his jewelry and garden sculptures at the ninth annual Loomis Art Loop Open Studios Tour. Former Del Oro High teacher John Dominguez displayed his custom jewelry. Lisa Bone showcased her horsehair raku. Also participating in the tour were Brenda Dominguez, Susan Goodmundson, Judy Arrigotti, Sandy Delehanty, Cindy Bonito, Judy Butler, Victoria Brooks, Stacey Lamothe, Larry Brenden and Janet Paehlig. One artist was noticeably absent. Millie Beatie, an accomplished potter, succumbed to cancer. Fellow artist Susan Goodmundson remembered her friend, "We all greatly admired her and the pottery she produced was of the highest quality." Mark Davis and Diego Quinto were among the Del Oro High School band members preparing for an eight-hour "Play-A-Thon" fundraiser to buy new instruments. Gabriel Irvine of Rocklin edged out Reed Van Stralen in one of the Soapbox Derby races sponsored by the Loomis School Parent Club. Injured fawns find new life at Kindred Spirits Fawn Rescue of Loomis. Founder Diane Nicholas said they receive about 800 calls per season. She and her husband, Bill, foot most of the operation's costs and rely on volunteer help. One volunteer, Sean Smith of Roseville, helped build fawn holding pens and strung electric fencing to keep mountain lions out. Brian Lammi and Robin Tourtillott helped build a planter box at Loomis School as part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' annual "Mormon Helping Hands" day. Former Chicago Bears football player Jeff Sevy of Loomis was inducted into the DeAnza College Hall of Fame. He played football there on the defensive line. He later transferred to play for Cal and Coach Mike White. Back in high school, Jeff sometimes blocked bullies from picking on future Silicon Valley legend and Apple Computer co-founder Steve Wozniak. "They still had bullying back in the '60's and so I'd stick up for Wozniak," Sevy explained. 25 Years Ago May 8, 1997 The Matsuda Landscape and Bonsai Nursery in Newcastle was the site for a Placer County JACL (Japanese American Citizens League) event. Helping organize the event included Hiroshi Matsuda, Thaya Mune Craig and Gordon Takemoto. Loomis Methodist Church members had a moving and educational experience of learning about the hardships suffered by Japanese American citizens during World War II, many of them also church members. Shig Yokote, Frank Kageta, Roy Uyeda and Homer Takahashi recalled how it felt to be fighting in Europe with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team while their families were imprisoned in internment camps. A rare videotape from inside a camp was shown. May is Older American Month and Roseville scheduled its eighth annual Senior Faire with the theme "Caregiving: Compassion in Action." J.P. Newsome and Scott Rae were among the Troop 12 Boy Scouts preparing a pancake breakfast as part of the celebration for the troop's 75th year. The troop history included the Life Saving Award for Scout Stephen Roberts, 13, for saving another Scout's life. When several Loomis boys were fishing at a local granite quarry hole many years ago, young 9-year-old Lloyd Gatt fell into the quarry, which was 70 to 80 feet deep. Stephen demonstrated the Scout motto, "Be Prepared," dove into the water and swam 60 feet to the struggling lad. Lloyd held onto Stephen's shirt and was towed back 60 feet to the only safe place where a swimmer could land due to the quarry's steep slope on three sides. The Mother Lode Area Special Olympics Track Meet was held at Rocklin High School. The pitching duo of Lisa Sherman, with a record of 15-0, and Jessica Logsdon (10-0) helped the Del Oro Softball team remain undefeated on the season. Del Oro High School's Jami Hirsch and Tyler Duncan were the Girls' and Boys' State representatives for their school. Jami belongs to the Junior Statesmen of America, Girls' Athletics Association and is a yearbook staff writer. She also volunteered with the Roseville Hospital Junior Auxiliary. Tyler volunteers at elementary school basketball camps and at St. Vincent de Paul Roseville Center. The alternates were Erin Stetzer and Andrew Thomson. 50 Years Ago May 18, 1972 A Rosary was recited for Mrs. Jennie Marie Leighton, 60, a Hawaii native and an Auburn-Loomis area resident for 30 years. Army Private First Class Ronald Uno, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kunihiro Uno of Loomis and a 1971 Del Oro High School graduate, earned the combat infantry badge while assigned near Da Nang, Vietnam with the 196th Infantry Brigade. Alice Gade has been selected by the American Legion Auxiliary of the John A. Stacker Post No. 775 to represent Del Oro High School at the annual Girls State. She is active at her high school in the Spanish Club, Ski Club, Girls Track, A.K.O., Golden Eagle Band, A Capella Choir and Cum Laude. Due to the lack of rainfall and high temperatures, fire season was declared for Placer County. The Placer County exhibit for the upcoming California State Fair will feature falling snow and an animated gold miner working a running stream. George Hirakawa of Penryn, along with Isabel Bravo and Oscar Meza, attended a meeting of the Placer County Committee of the Tuberculosis and Health Association. In the county, the average contribution in the Christmas Seal Campaign is $3.41. General Chairman Ray Canavan announced the date for the 27th annual Placer County Fair. The American Legion Auxiliary members are selling paper poppies on Poppy Days. The poppies are made by disabled veterans who are hospitalized. The funds are used to purchase incidentals for the veterans. Cheryl Tognetti of the Loomis 4-H Club was named Placer County 4-H Dress Review winner. She will represent the county during the State 4-H Leadership Conference at University of California at Davis. Junior division alternate is 10-year-old Brenda Curtis of the Mt. Pleasant 4-H Club. Named to the Blue award group included Josephine Scherer, Lori Duarte, Ailene Nakata of the Loomis club; Margaret Wycoff, Julie Pingree, Jill Henry, Sherry Ensey, Karen Bakotich, and Bonita Nelson of Miners Ravine; and Keri Corr of Eureka. 75 Years Ago November 1946 Mrs. Lucy Victoria Free, 23, and her 10-day-old daughter, Mary Louise, were found drowned in an irrigation canal near their ranch in Newcastle. The body of Clarence Louis Logan, 55, a farmer, was found in a field near his home. A Lincoln native, he spent his entire life in the area. He lost his wife one year ago. Mrs. Elizabeth Pearce, a Penryn Elementary School teacher, was honored to be the Director of Activities for the Placer County Teachers Association. Alice Monahan Williams ran for the Senate from the 7th District when Governor Warren called for a special election. The mother of a 9-year-old son, Tom, and the widow of a war veteran, Alice owned and operated an orchard in the Ophir District. Mr. and Mrs. Stark were fortunate that a chimney fire was extinguished quickly by the Loomis Fire Department. Earning Scout leadership training certificates included Philip Leak, C.W. Lauppe and Sayre Hunting of Roseville; Howard Snelling of Penryn; and Earl Gates of Loomis. Dave Takagishi won a knitted afghan at the Loomis Grange Bazaar. Dave presented the afghan as a gift to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Rasmussen in appreciation for helping to save the Takagishi home from fire while they were away. A large 20-pound bobcat was the fourth one H.L. Robbins killed near the Walch Turkey Ranch east of Loomis. Mr. and Mrs. William Crosley, along with Mr. and Mrs. Al Gomez of Loomis, attended the turkey shoot at Mormon Island. Justice of the Peace Leonard M. Layton said the fine for speeding would increase by 100% from $1 to $2 a mile. The Naval Air Station in Livermore was inactivated. Local women were invited to the home of Mrs. Jessie Lindroth in Penryn to learn about sugar-saving holiday desserts. Suggestions included using honey or molasses as sugar substitutes plus using a pressure saucepan in preparing holiday puddings.
