1 killed, 2 arrested following fight near Roseville homeless facility

Authorities in Roseville are continuing to put together the pieces of an ongoing homicide investigation after one man was killed and another has been arrested following an altercation Monday. According to initial reports, Roseville police responded to reports of an altercation at approximately 3 a.m. Monday on the 100 block of North Sunrise Ave., outside of the Hampton Inn and Suites building. The former hotel is presently a Project Roomkey facility, with plans in the works to convert it into permanent housing for the homeless. After officers arrived on the scene of what was reported as a physical fight, it was determined that the altercation was between two men. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other had fled the scene in a vehicle. With the help of the Sacramento Police Department SWAT team, officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect by late Monday afternoon, who has now been identified as 21-year-old Andrew Aguiar of Sacramento County.Aguiar has been booked into the South Placer Jail and is facing charges of murder, assault with a deadly weapon and other related charges. A female who was reportedly involved in the incident, 19-year-old Shirley J. Horton of Sacramento, was also arrested and booked into jail on a charge of accessory to a crime. The name of the man killed has not been released. At this time, Placer County officials have not confirmed or released information in regard to if the victim or the suspect are actively connected to the housing center near the incident's location."County staff who have supported Project Roomkey operations are working closely with Roseville Police as they conduct their investigation," read a statement issued by Placer County following the incident. "We continue to have 24/7 security onsite to support the safety of residents and the surrounding community. We thank RPD (Roseville Police Department) for their work and extend our deepest condolences to everyone impacted by this tragic event."Investigators are going through surveillance videos and interviewing other guests experiencing homelessness to determine what led up to the altercation. Monday's incident is the second Roseville murder of 2022. On April 20, a 41-year-old woman was found slain in an unincorporated Roseville home off Livoti Avenue in a case that is still under investigation.
