It gives me great pride to put on my uniform and badge each and every day to help ensure that others will have a sense of safety and security. This Veterans Day, I would like to take an opportunity to recognize several members of our police department who served our country in perhaps a more spectacular way than before they put on their police uniforms. The money is part of a Veteran's Administration, Housing and Urban Development appropriations package that includes funding for independent federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA controls regulations for wastewater treatment facilities.In April 1999, a joint-powers agreement between the county, cities of Auburn and Lincoln, the South Placer Municipal Utilities District and the Newcastle Sanitary District was signed to look into seeking funding and a design for a regional facility. 20 YEARS AGONov. 9, 1989Area wide law enforcement personnel receive honors – A Lincoln police officer and a deputy dispatcher who is also a city resident are among Placer County law enforcement officers in all positions have who been recognized for outstanding acts at the first ever countywide Honors and Awards Presentations. Lincoln officer Pal Shelgren was awarded the Silver Medal of Valor for heroic actions. He is currently working undercover with the Placer County Special Investigation Unit. On October 14, 1988, Shelgren responded to a domestic dispute with weapons reported as possibly involved. When he announced his arrival, a woman answered the door. While Shelgren was determining the validity of the call, he saw a man in the house walking towards him with a sawed-off shotgun. Pulling his service revolver, Shelgren pushed the woman aside and ordered the man to put the weapon down. He did not comply, but continued to approach, loading the weapon as he walked. Rather than use deadly force, Shelgren warned the man again. This time, the man stopped and put the shotgun on the floor. He was taken into custody. Shelgren lives with his wife and daughter in Lincoln.50 YEARS AGONov. 5, 1959Report Says 400 Took Part In Summer Swimming Program – More than 400 persons participated in this summer's swimming program and at least 200 boys were active in Lincoln Boys Baseball league, it was reported at a Lincoln recreation committee meeting here recently. The summer program is under the sponsorship of this committee, and includes the swimming aquacade and up until this year a "Teen" and "Sub-teen" program during the winter months. Due to lack of interest and leadership among the teenagers, and non participation of parents as advisors, the teen program has been temporarily discontinued.75 YEARS AGONov. 8, 1934S.P. Switchman Is Hit-And-Run Victim; Lincoln Man Arrested – Walter Durrill, well-known Southern Pacific switchman in Roseville, was the victim of a hit-and-run driver at the Lincoln street crossing in Roseville early Monday evening. He is resting at his home in Roseville, his injuries not serious. The accident occurred while Durill was at work. E.J. Webber, Lincoln garage operator, was arrested Tuesday and charges with being the driver of the hit-and-run automobile. He was also charged with driving while intoxicated. Webber told police he had driven from Roseville to Sacramento Monday, but that he was intoxicated and did not remember any of the details. A circular piece of headlight glass at the scene of the accident formed the clue to the hit-and-run driver. The arrest was made by Captain C.J. LaPorte of the state highway patrol, and F.A. Taylor, sergeant of railroad police.
