10 Years Ago June 7, 2012 Russell Smith, a Del Oro High School graduate, wore the same pair of navy blue pin-striped pants during his graduation that his grandfather, Jim Smith, wore during his graduation in 1950 in Lewisville, Texas. For more than 60 years, every male in the Smith family kept the unique tradition going. When Jim Smith wore the pants it was out of necessity rather than tradition. His family lived on a ranch and didn't have much, so his mother wanted him to wear something nice for graduation. His father's suit pants were all they had. Certificated employees of the Loomis Union School District honored for outstanding service are Tracy Curry, Linda Shlesinger, Crystal Call, Gina Green, Kristi Brown, Bea Bonner and Glenn Lockwood. Cadet Russell Bettencourt, a 2007 Del Oro graduate, is named to the Dean's List at the U.S. Military Academy. He also earned the Superintendent's Award for Excellence, which is presented to only the top five percent of cadets. Del Oro High School's Carlie Beasley was a key player on her school's softball team but missed her senior year, due to an undiagnosed illness that caused uncontrollable shaking. Although sidelined, Beasley continued to cheer on her team. Beasley is thankful for the support and kindness that the Del Oro students have shown her. Loomis Senior L.I.F.E. Center members Connie Vieira and Jeannie Schmidt learned to dance to the Hukilau song performed by the hula group, Hula Rono. Ashley Hennige sang and played guitar during the Loomis Basin Has Talent contest. Performances are held at Cattleman's Restaurant in Roseville and the Green Elephant Restaurant in Loomis. Retiring Del Oro High School teachers Chuck Gardner, Barbara Millhollen, Catherine Travers and Stephen Jones taught completely different subjects but agree that technology is responsible for the biggest changes. Although looking forward to active retirement, the retiring teachers each said they will miss working with the students, parents and their colleagues. 25 Years Ago June 5, 1997 A memorial service was held for Warren H. Grayson, 76, a Missouri native. A retired pressman, Grayson was a Veterans of Foreign Wars member. Grayson and his wife owned the Iris Pathway in Loomis. Funeral services were held for Daniel W. Clevinger, 72, a Lorenzo, Texas native. He was a Penryn resident for 27 years. Services were held for Del Oro High School sophomore Amy Elizabeth Ripley. She was a popular student and competed on the track team. Ripley's interests included childcare. She died in a traffic accident. Michael Richmond, son of April and William Richmond of Newcastle, joined the U.S. Army's Delayed Entry Program. Air Force Airman Charly S. Young, daughter of Sharron Young of Weimar, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Marine Lance Cpl. Samuel Berquist, son of David Berquist of Newcastle, completed a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the ships of the USS Essex Amphibious Ready Group. Del Oro High School student Steven Stafford entered the Air Force's Delayed Enlistment Program. He will earn credit toward an AA degree through the Community College of the Air Force while attending basic training and a technical school. The Del Oro High softball team ended the season with a 34-2 record after losing to Roseville High 4-3 in the Division II Playoffs. The Placer County Sheriff's Substation in Loomis plans to host an open house. Among the staff ready to welcome the public are Lt. David Keyes, Sgt. Chris Land and Deputies Dede Hesse, Sharon Roloff and Dave Lowe. Sheriff Ed Bonner is a Loomis resident and a Del Oro High School graduate. 50 Years Ago June 15, 1972 Funeral services were held for Matthew Bryan Gillespie, 70, a Vernal, Utah native and a Loomis resident. He retired as a night watchman for the Mayflower Packing Company in Exeter, California. Services were held for Sadie D. Elftman, 83, an Iowa native. She moved to California in 1933 and more recently to Loomis. Local students earning college degrees include from University of California at Davis, Deborah Brown and Rodney Miller of Rocklin, Robert Goto of Penryn and Donald Hayashida of Loomis; from California State University at Hayward, Kenneth Bolin and Charles Howard Wallen of Loomis; and from Stanford, Akiko Kitada of Loomis. Hike Yego, winner of the Loomis Constable race, fills the vacancy due to the death of Percy Lanouette last January. The first high school graduate for the Loomis Christian School is Paul Ray Cagle, Jr. Also receiving a diploma is Joan McKinley Cagle. She finished her studies through the American School by correspondence. Rusty Uratsu of Loomis is the outgoing president of the Placer County Chamber of Commerce. New officers for 1972-73 include Eugene Smith of Auburn, Bill Finger of Roseville and Wayne Turner of Loomis. Mrs. C.K. Sakamoto is looking for volunteers to help with "Operation Cookie," a project to "bring a touch of home" to local residents serving in the military. Some of the organizations and individuals who have helped before are the American Legion Auxiliary, Mrs. Margarita Nevarez, Mrs. Ed Duarte and Mrs. Edna Blinman. In 1936 while at a Farm Bureau meeting, the need for a 4-H Club for the young people of the Loomis area was discussed. Herbert Catlin, Farm Advisor of Placer County, and a local farmer, Markey Rasmussen, did some planning. They attended existing club meetings at Mt. Pleasant, Gold Hill and Mt. Vernon to learn more. A new Loomis 4-H Club was formed in fall 1937, led by Markey Rasmussen, with assistants Fred Hamberg, Mrs. R.B. Ferguson, Mrs. Cowles, Mrs. John Vierra, Mrs. Fred O'Connor and John Boyington. 75 Years Ago December 1946 Many a farmer's wife was startled to learn that a "price" had been put on her head, so to speak. According to the Farm Journal, "Mrs. Farmer" is worth no less than $69,000. This is her lifetime value to her husband. The figure is based on a survey of farm wives and their work. A housewife on a farm is more of a business partner to her husband than is her counterpart in the city. Maybe some farm wives would like to "cash in" on their value. Celebrating her 70th birthday is Mrs. Dick Ramsey, along with her husband who turns 76. Mrs. Freida Rayback is the local agent for Gibson Bus Lines. Before World War II, 9 percent of American workers were women. Today, the percentage is estimated to be 13 in every 100 workers. Roseville Fire Chief Fred Garbolino announced the arrival of a new fire truck that will pump 750 gallons per minute.
