Missoula's Peterman wins Western States Endurance Run in 100-mile debut

Adam Peterman of Missoula, Montana, won the 2022 Western States Endurance Run on Saturday, crossing the finish line at Placer High School's LeFebvre Stadium in a time of 15 hours, 13 minutes and 48 seconds. Peterman became the second person since 1999 to win in his Western States debut, the other being Andrew Miller in 2016. Peterman is also the first since 1986 to win in his first 100-mile race. "I had a great crew, like support staff, and it was so awesome," an exhausted Peterman said in his post-race interview. "I couldn't even imagine pushing really hard. It was so hot." He made his move for first place around mile 70 in the race, where he caught Hayden Hawks of Cedar City, Utah. "It's kind of funny because when you're passing someone in an ultra, it's like an old person race," Peterman said. "Finally, I caught up to him and passed him. … It got really intense by the river, where there are these lines that are along the train tracks, but I could tell that I was breathing less hard than him." Peterman punched his ticket to Western States in April, when he won the UTMB Canyons Endurance Run 100k from Auburn to China Wall. He ran his first ultra just 11 months ago and has won all five in which he has competed. Asked if he would return next year to defend his title, Peterman said, "I don't know. I had a great race, but I'd love to run a faster time. Seems kind of far away right now. Yeah, I'll definitely be back eventually, hopefully next year. We'll see." Hawks still had a strong showing with a second-place finish in 15:47:27. Arlen Glick of Massillon, Ohio, rounded out the top three, finishing in 15:56:17. Ruth Croft of New Zealand was the first female to finish and was 12th overall in 17:21:30, the third-fastest time for a woman on the course. Croft was the runner-up in 2021. The final female to cross was Ninette Banoun of Norway with a time of 29 hours, 55 minutes and 31 seconds. The final finisher was Andrzej Ulatowski, 17 seconds later. Men's Top Ten 1.
