Roseville Little League roundup: Woodcreek and Maidu win District 54 Tournaments

District 54 Tournaments for Roseville, Woodcreek, Maidu and Lakeside Little League have taken place the last couple of weeks with winners advancing to section tournaments. Here's a look at how all local teams have fared. Juniors The Woodcreek Juniors Little League All-Stars won the District 54 Tournament against Folsom National 4-2 on June 24 to advance to the Section 4 Tournament. Woodcreek blew out Ponderosa 16-0 in the first round before defeating Folsom National 8-6 in the second round. "The biggest strengths are this team is having fun playing together," manager Andy Scott said. "All of the players show up day in and day out for themselves and for the guys on the team, and they smile while they do it. Each player has a spot to contribute at, in the field, at the plate and in the dugout and they believe in it." Woodcreek won the first game of the tournament 8-3 against Rio Linda last Saturday and totaled 18 hits in the contest. Jack McCurnin, Lukas Shaw, Braden Gibbs and Alex Baltazar each hit a double while Cody Scott went two for three with a walk and two runs batted in. They scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Scott made the game-winning double play catching a pop up in foul territory on the first base side and then throwing to third base to catch the runner. Woodcreek faced Grass Valley on Tuesday and lost 9-2. They played against Rio Linda on Wednesday in the consolation final winning 14-5 and were led by Scott who went four for four with a walk and seven runs batted in. Kaleb Coco threw six innings and gave up seven hits and only two earned runs. Woodcreek advanced to the championship round to face Grass Valley on Thursday. Majors The Roseville Majors Little League All-Stars lost in the consolation final to Folsom American on July 8. Roseville started the tournament strong with wins over Hangtown and Ponderosa before losing 13-0 against El Dorado Hills in the semifinal game on July 5. Lakeside Little League of Granite Bay lost its first game in the tournament to Woodcreek but bounced back in a big way, winning three games in the consolation bracket against Hangtown, Cosumnes and Maidu. They eventually lost to Folsom American 17-2 on July 5 in the consolation semifinals. Maidu won its first game against Folsom American before dropping their next two games against El Dorado Hills and Lakeside to be knocked out of the tournament. After defeating Lakeside in the first round, Woodcreek would go on to lose its next two games against El Dorado Hills and Folsom American, the two teams that would end up in the championship round. 11U The Maidu 11U All-Stars won the District 54 Championship with a 7-6 win over El Dorado Hills last Saturday. Maidu led during most of the game and added on two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend its lead to 7-4. Maidu's Jenner Nishimura ripped a double for the first insurance run and three batters later, Maddox Zabeleri singled to bring home the second. El Dorado Hills nearly forced a game on Monday as they scored twice in the bottom of the inning and had runners on second and third before Maidu's Tyler Drigenberg got the game-winning strikeout. "This is so great," said Maidu manager Heath Drigenberg of winning the District 54 championship. "This is probably the hardest-working group I've ever coached. We have two-and-a-half-hour practices and I tell them we're done and they're asking me why? Another thing about this team, they all love each other. There is no fighting on this team. It's just a beautiful group of young men. El Dorado Hills is a great team and we had a battle on our hands. I told the team they'd have to deal with some in-game adversity and we certainly did but we outlasted it." Maidu will now move on to the Section Tournament. Woodcreek won its first two games in the tournament against Lakeside and El Dorado Hills before losing to Maidu in the semifinal round. In the consolation final on July 7, Woodcreek again faced El Dorado Hills. The game started rough for Woodcreek as they gave up four runs in the first inning off of four hits and three errors but they bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the inning off of hits by Michael Musgrove Jr. and David Rubio. Joey Schwartz started the game on the mound and after the first inning only allowed three baserunners while striking out two batters. Woodcreek had a chance to score in the fifth but Musgrove was picked off on second base to end the inning. In the sixth, Woodcreek scored a run from a double by Jaxson Bahlman and had the tying run on third but grounded out to end the game. "It's two games in a row where they fought and came back and didn't give up," manager Bryan Burchit said. "We preach that a lot and they did it but just came up short in both of them. They got it back to make it a ballgame and I'm proud of them for that." Roseville won its first game against Cosumnes 10-0 on June 20 before losing to Maidu in the second round. They lost 5-4 in their first game in the consolation bracket to Ponderosa. 10U The Roseville 10U All-Stars lost 5-0 against Ponderosa in the District 54 Championship game in Granite Bay on Saturday. Roseville won its first two games of the tournament by dominating Divide and Lakeside before losing 6-5 against Ponderosa on June 29. They then defeated Roseville 13-9 in the consolation final to once again face off against Ponderosa in the championship round. Roseville was forced to win two games against Ponderosa while Ponderosa only needed to win once. In the first game on July 8, Roseville dominated 16-7 and scored 13 runs in the fourth inning alone. Luke Karakas went three for five with three runs batted in and also pitched an inning on the mound. Jude Neumann also had a solid game with two hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored. "I love all of our kids and everyone all through the lineup can definitely hit," manager Darryle Fukano said. "They take really great approaches to the ball. I'm not surprised that all of them went up there with a good approach to hit the ball today." Woodcreek lost its first game in the tournament to Ponderosa but answered back in the consolation bracket with wins against Folsom American, Lakeside and El Dorado Hills. They finally lost in a close battle against Roseville in the consolation final on July 5. Lakeside won its first two games of the tournament against Maidu and Folsom American before losing to Roseville in the quarterfinals of the winner's bracket. Their tournament run came to an end with an 8-7 loss against Woodcreek. Despite losing their first game of the tournament, Maidu won its first two games in the consolation bracket against Divide and Folsom National before getting blown out by El Dorado Hills on June 27. Tri-City Majors All-Stars The Tri-City Majors All-Stars of Rocklin won the District 11 Championship on July 8 in Nevada City with an 11-0 victory against Grass Valley. Tri-City didn't allow a single run in the four games of the tournament and scored a combined 50 runs.
