Placer County Council, Navy League of US now open to active-duty members

The Placer County Council of the Navy League of the United States announced it can now open its membership to active-duty military and civilians who care about the well-being of the nation's sea services. The Navy League was founded in 1902 with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt as a non-profit educational and advocacy organization that supports the health and strength of the nation's sea services: Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and U.S. Flag Merchant Marine. It also supports programs which expose young people to the values of the nation's sea services. It originally accepted active-duty membership, but that changed during World War II and it became an all-civilian organization. The national offices of the NLUS have only recently accepted active-duty members again. Membership benefits include a subscription to the nationally known SeaPower magazine, scholarship opportunities, discounts and many ways to serve the local community. It offers active-duty members a way to transition from their service to the nation to yet another way to serve, nationally and locally, easing back into civilian life and community involvement. As such, membership also is a very appropriate gift for someone in your family who is currently serving in the military. The Placer County Council was chartered in December 1956 and has been an active force in the community since. The general membership meets every third Monday of the month at Auburn Veterans Hall, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. for a social hour, followed at 6:30 by a brief business meeting, a catered dinner and a program. The Placer County Council supports advocacy for the sea services locally and nationally and numerous youth groups, including three Sea Cadet units and their accompanying Navy League units: Luther Burbank NJROTC, Yuba City NNDCC and California Maritime Academy. The council has just endowed a scholarship program in a local high school as well.
