LOOKING BACK From our archives; compiled by Howard Stitt 10 Years Ago Sept. 6, 2012 Services are planned for Norman Paul Ficker, 87, a descendant of the Berryessa family. A World War II veteran of the Merchant Marines, Ficker retired from SMUD after 34 years and then went into the swimming pool business with his son. A memorial service was held for Parlie "Lee" Rawlin, 84, a Yuba City native and a Loomis resident for 37 years. She worked in lumber sales for 40 years. Casey Bird and Sherri Conway opened Bridgeyoga on Taylor Road in Loomis. They first met in a yoga class a few years ago. They were there for different reasons, Casey as therapy for an injured knee and Sherri was grieving the loss of her parents. Both found yoga a positive healing experience. Bridgeyoga features hatha yoga, combining physical poses and breathing techniques to create balance in the body and mind. The American Legion John A. Stacker Post 775 will host 9/11 "Do Not Forget." Commander Fuzzy Jarnagin said, "We need to remember so it doesn't happen again." Some 250 Sierra College students are former foster youths. Many qualify for Pell grants to cover tuition. This year, Soroptimist International of Loomis Basin provided five rooms in the dorms, which usually cost $3,350 per semester. I-80 near Penryn was covered with 40,000 pounds of potatoes as a big rig crashed. The Del Oro High School Cheer teams packed the Ronald McDonald House pantry with food collected from local neighborhoods. Among the cheer members were Allie Dressler, Marissa Ferreira, Ciara Webber and Madeline Hennessy. The Loomis-based Richmond/Stark AA Unlimited Streamliner Team took their twin 1100 HP twin engine, 4-wheel drive, blown streamliner to the Bonneville Salt Flats. The team's hope was to break the 417 MPH speed limit but they were unable to make the attempt. 25 Years Ago Sept. 4, 1997 Three World War II veterans of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team were honored at a premier documentary film "Beyond Barbed Wire" at the Crest Theater in Sacramento. Honored were Tom Kashiwabara of Penryn, Kaz Muto of Fairfield and Shigeo Yokote of Loomis. The film, narrated by Noriyuko "Pat" Morita, told the story of the heroic Japanese American men who comprised the combat team. Placer County had 52 soldiers in the 442nd serving in Europe. Of those, Masa Sakamoto of Loomis and Kiyoshi Masaoka of Penryn were killed in action. A resident of Thornwood Drive in Loomis found a rattlesnake in her kitchen. The fire department responded but was unable to locate the snake. Loomis Troop 12 Boy Scouts completed a 26-mile backpacking trip to the Mokelumne Wilderness, the third leg of the 186-mile-long Tahoe-Yosemite Trail (TYT). The Scouts were Alex Nitta, Ryan Cline, Thomas Hall, Mat Gerdes, Scott Rae and Seth Peterson, along with Scout leaders George Cline, Tom Rae and John Nitta. Local artist Ute Drescher will show her watercolors at Lake Forest Cafe in Folsom. Granite Bay High School student Ricky Nelson will play favorite country tunes at the Western Barbecue Fundraiser at the Old Flower Farm in Loomis. The event will be hosted by Sierra College Patrons and Foundation. The performance of "Most Blessed" returned to the Red Brick Art Center in Loomis. Adapted by Motherlode Artistic Director Stuart Smith from Cathy Luchetti's book "I Do," it tells the story of more than a dozen women and their marriages in the frontier West. One woman was Elsa Jane Guerin, who dressed like a man for more than 30 years while she tracked down her husband's killer. The Loomis News printed a front page from a May 17, 1918 publication of the Loomis Recorder called "Life Reflected." One article was as follows: "A petition is forwarded to the officers at Camp Kearney asking that some of the boys from Placer County be furloughed home for the harvest season." 50 Years Ago Sept. 14, 1972 Roseville's Royer Park will be the location for the Swing Shifters ninth-anniversary Hoedown. Dave Abbott will call the Squares and Bob and Betty Dean the Pre-Rounds. All square dancers are welcome. Tom Hightower normally calls for the Swing Shifters every Sunday at the Folsom Community Club House. Loomis residents opposed to the Turner Annexation to Rocklin are urged to attend the open public meeting of R.U.R.A.L. (Residents United for a Rural Agricultural Loomis). The proposed annexation involves 340 acres totally within the Loomis Fire District, the Loomis School District and Postal Districts. The Roseville-Loomis Unit of Church Women United scheduled a Church World Service Clothing Appeal as its first activity for the fall season. During the upcoming World Community Day, officers will be elected. Free breathing tests are given at the Auburn District Fair sponsored by the Tuberculosis and Health Association. The test is quite simple. People breathe into a tube as hard as they can. The tube is connected to a machine that measures the lung capacity. Jackie Ashley of Loomis was traveling with her daughter, Shelly McAllister, near Colville, when she found a balloon with a card inside. The card asked the finder to return it with the location written in order to determine how far the balloon had traveled. The balloon had been launched by Jeff Day of Palo Alto and traveled 157 miles. It was a contest sponsored by the Palo Alto Recreation Department. Quang Tri City is recaptured by South Vietnamese forces. The massive support from American aircraft is helping the South defeat the Easter Offensive. 75 Years Ago March 1947 Services are held for Mary Ellen Wilson, 62, a native of Colfax and a resident of Rocklin for most of her life. She was the widow of early day cattleman, Ira Wilson. Funeral services are held for Mrs. Martha Evelyn Harness, 72, a native of Lima, Illinois. She had lived in Loomis for most of 35 years before moving to Camino to live with her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Woods She was the wife of Ike Harness. Teachers in the county help locate minor children to be served at the Annual Crippled Children Diagnostic Clinic. Physical conditions which should be referred include poor muscular control due to infantile paralysis. The Office of Price Administration (OPA) announced Stamp No. 53 will be good for 5 pounds of sugar.
