10 Years Ago Sept. 27, 2012 A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for Emanuel "Mike" Camilleri, 84, a San Francisco native and a Loomis resident. He was an Army World War II veteran and a Navy Korean War veteran. He worked in the flooring business for more than 40 years. A memorial service is planned for Kathy Kiyoko Straub, 48. She grew up in the Penryn area and graduated from Del Oro High School. She worked in various state agencies before retiring from Caltrans. Rusty Richards will be one of those featured during the Cowboy Poetry event held at the Blue Goose Fruit Shed in Loomis. Richards is a real cowboy and also worked as a riding-shooting cowboy in many Western films and TV shows, including "Gunsmoke"and "Bonanza." He also sang tenor with the Sons of the Pioneers for 20 years. Boberg Flooring in Loomis suffered only minor damage from a fire. "We're lucky to have such a good fire department here," owner Mike Boberg said. Carolyn Harkonnen, a lifetime Loomis resident, had her peanut brittle pie selected as a semi-finalist in the Eggland's "Your Best Recipe" contest. Her dessert was one of five out of thousands of entries. Harkonnen was also a finalist in the 2004 Pillsbury Bake-Off. Union Pacific Railroad's steam engine No. 844 is scheduled to pass through the area on the way to be displayed at the Sacramento Railroad Museum. Youngsters Nico Mott of Rocklin and Matthew Robirds of Roseville were shown the inside of an ambulance by paramedic Gabe Cruz during the Children's Health & Safety Faire. The Placer Buddhist Church held its 48th Food Bazaar. "Placer is number one in chicken teriyaki, chow mein and sushi," said Ron Kawahata, bazaar co-chairman. Among the chow mein cooks was Frank Hirata. Katie Nitta admired the flower arrangements created by the Placer Sogetsu School and calligraphy by the Shodo class. Syndey Easley, 4, was helped by her aunt, Yvonne Yoshikawa, to prepare for the kimono fashion show. 25 Years Ago Sept. 25, 1997 Memorial services were held for Geneva E. Helm, 70, an Oklahoma native. She was a homemaker, rancher and former owner of Ben's Big Burgers in North Sacramento. She was also actively involved in Music Ministry. The Rocklin Aquatic Masters hosted the Foothill Classic swim meet. Local swimmers earning medals were Marge Nute (80 to 84 age group), Janet Olsen (60 to 64), Nick Righos (40 to 44), and Cynthia Wickes (45 to 49) from Loomis; Jeff Pearson (25 to 29) and Barry Schlesinger (45 to 49) of Granite Bay; Eric Totten (25 to 29) Lemoine Bond (55 to 59) Tim Johnson (45 to 49) and Larry Ampulski (45 to 49) of Roseville; Christine Canty of Penryn; and Lisa Nunn (30 to 34) of Rocklin. Shelly Fullerton of Loomis entered a Dorset in the Sheep Division of the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. It is the world's largest purebred livestock show. A dozen cowboy poets will be featured at the third annual Cowpoke Poetry Gathering in Loomis. The event will include Sourdough Slim, the Yodeling Cowboy. He grew up on a cattle ranch in the Sierra foothills but his true calling was on stage. In 1988, Rick Crowder became Sourdough Slim. A taste of Japanese culture will be offered during the 33rd annual Autumn Festival and Food Bazaar held at the Placer Buddhist Church in Penryn. This will be the first year that the late Paul Yokote will not be covering the event to take photos for The Loomis News. Loomis was the site of the10th annual Eggplant Festival. Robin Stoddard of Loomis was the sweepstakes winner in the cooking contest with a frosted eggplant bread. Other winners were Holli Lehner - grilled eggplant sandwich, Beth Flint-Montero - eggplant cake, Nancy Palmer-Morgan - eggplant surprise, Jenny Knisley - eggplant converse, Carolyn Lignos - Mediterranean eggplant and eggplant gingersnaps, Peter Ucovich - eggplant de Pedro, Miguel Ucovich - eggplant salad, Heidi Rabjohn - eggplant supreme, Surjit Ghotra - eggplant lasagna and Ramona Hogan - eggplant cake. 50 Years Ago Oct. 5, 1972 Services were held for Judge George Washington English, 90, a Pittsburg, Pennsylvania native and a Loomis resident. He retired in 1966 as presiding judge of the Loomis Judicial Court after 14 years on the bench. He was a member of the Loomis Lions Club and Senior Citizens Club of Auburn Mr. and Mrs. Raymond (Bud) Pisarek are the new owners of The Loomis News. The paper was born 32 years ago under the management of Paul and Betty Sagaser. Under the direction of Mr. Ron Jones, the Del Oro Golden Eagle Marching Band was the first in Northern California to specialize in precision marching, which emphasizes special cadence and unity during performance. Band members and parents are currently engaged in fundraising events to send the band to compete in Boise, Idaho. A flood plain study of Dry Creek and its tributaries in the Roseville area is initiated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. There are areas subject to flooding that need to be identified. Over thunderings of protest, the Rocklin City Council passed a resolution approving the request by Clark Turner to annex 300 acres to the city of Rocklin. The property is located along I-80 from Sierra College Boulevard. to Barton Road on the east. A group called Residents United for a Rural Agricultural Loomis (RURAL) is opposing the annexation. German food, beverages and music will be served during the third annual Oktoberfest held at the Auburn Fairgrounds. Senator Goldwater was the first prophet, "Flatten' em. There won't be hide nor hair left, but that'll end the war." Governor Reagan's idea, "We should turn North Vietnam into a parking lot." President Nixon was more cautious, it's called "Vietnamization." A strange thing happened in the early 1970s. Stars began scoring hits with songs from the 1940s. For example, the Pointer Sisters had "Salt Peanuts" based on a 1942 riff from Dizzy Gillespie. 75 Years Ago March 1947 Funeral services were held for Mary Jane Coburn, born on May 17, 1862 in Yuba County. She married Frank Coburn of Smartsville and they moved to Placer County prior to 19009. Mrs. Coburn lived in Lincoln from 1937 to 1942, then came to Loomis to make her home with son, Merl Coburn. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Adkins, crossed the plains in a covered wagon in 1852. Howard Fisher, local grocery clerk during the week and pilot on Sundays, will be leaving Loomis to take up brain work in the aeronautical field. A jury found John Clayton, a Penryn youth, not guilty of a charge of battery and disturbing the peace. The charge was filed by the father of Stanley Facha of Newcastle. Ammonium sulfamate is effective in killing poison oak, which is certainly prevalent in the area. James DeVilliers, son of Mrs. Opal Strasser, is employed at the Loomis Lumber Company. He had served 4 years in the service overseas. In charge of the Easter Egg Hunt at Rocklin School were Mesdames Ino Jensen, Doris Lewis, Bea Roche, Hifrid Keenan, and Miss Helen Kestis. Henry Hoyer of Hoyer Ranch is selling at auction one saddle horse, saddle, and bridle. The Rocklin Mother's Club served a turkey dinner for the Rocklin School boys basketball team. The hostesses were Mesdames Evelyn Ruhkala, Mary Bottomley, Elma Kokila, and Elsie Bottomley. John Mackey sent a pound of frozen butter to his daughter in Orange, New Jersey and it was still solid when it arrived. Even though it was sent by air mail, it took 2 1/2 days enroute.
