Men's soccer edged by Lake Tahoe The FLC men played a highly competitive match against an international squad representing Lake Tahoe Community College on Friday afternoon, but came out on the short end of the 1-0 final score. The visiting Coyotes - with 11 players from the U.K., UAE, or Italy - scored the only goal of the match early in the second half, and then held off the Falcons over the final frantic minutes. The teams were evenly matched and possession time appeared equal, but one defensive mistake by the Falcons led to an open shot and the Coyotes capitalized. "That was a tough loss because we were so evenly matched," said head coach Justin Johnson, whose team is now 2-4 in non-conference play. The Falcons have one more tune-up match - on Wednesday at Butte - before opening Big 8 Conference play on Friday against Cosumnes River at FLC. Women's soccer ties with Fresno The Folsom Lake and Fresno City women's soccer teams have a long history of extremely close matches - many of them in the playoffs - and Friday night proved to be no different. Playing in front of a spirited Falcon Stadium crowd, the two teams went head-to-head for 90 hard-fought minutes with neither squad successful at finding the net. Both goalkeepers were outstanding and were forced to make a litany of stops. The play on the field was superb with the Rams gaining the possession advantage for most of the first half of play. In the second half, however, the Falcons seemed to gain confidence and had many more scoring opportunities than during the first 45 minutes. Both teams pushed the limits in the final 10 minutes, as they tried to find the winning goal. Credit goes to outstanding defense on both squads. Falcon goalkeeper Grace Filiau had a terrific game with eight saves, as she recorded yet another shutout. The Falcons, now 5-0-2 in non-conference play - will play one more non-conference match before starting into Big 8 Conference play next week. They'll host West Valley (2-7) on Friday night at 6 p.m. Volleyball falls at Delta The San Joaquin Delta College volleyball team showed why they are currently ranked number three in California with a three-set sweep of the Falcons on Friday night in the Big 8 Conference opener for both teams. The Mustangs were led by their outstanding freshman hitter Kiyah Irby, who had 12 kills, as they won 25-15, 25-20, 25-14. For the Falcons, defensive specialist Maria Rivera once again turned in a remarkable performance with 35 digs. Freshman Olivia Rush accounted for 6 blocks to go with her 3 kills, and Mackenzie Natusch and Mikayla Ide each had 7 kills. The Falcons will travel to Pleasant Hill on Wednesday to face Diablo Valley at 6:30 p.m.
